New Paris natives create Man Day, get 275,000 men to ‘man up’
This entry was updated Tuesday, June 16, at 2:42 p.m.
Thousands of beer cans were undoubtedly crushed during National Man Day, Monday, June 15.
The brainchild of three New Paris natives - 19-year-old Joel Longanecker of Celestine, Ind., and his brothers Aaron, 27, of Indianapolis, and Josh, 28, of St. Louis - the day apparently gave men folk license to watch “Rocky” movies and scratch themselves (that’s what the Facebook page advocated).
“This day is the day for all men to stand up and say, “Yes, I am a Man.” And “Yes, I will step up and do manly things and whatever I want to do on this glorious day,” Man Day Facebook page says.
“You aren’t some Nancy that likes to frolic in the fields, unless it’s a field of mines and you have an AK47 and a hand full of grenades… Then you really are a man!”
Joel Longanecker, a youth pastor in Huntingburg, Ind., said the day was about fun and manning up.
“It is about taking responsibility,” he said.
Between now and Man Day 2010, the brothers plan to do volunteer work involving veterans’ issues and prostate cancer awareness.
The brothers talked up Man Day for months, eventually gaining 275,000 revelers.
The day garnered much press. The Day was mentioned on several TV stations and in newspapers including the Chicago Tribute.
Joel Longanecker said he and his brothers spent Man Day camping.
Ironically Man Day fell on a much more gentle day, Sneak a Kiss Day.

To deserve a day, you should earn it and not ‘just exist.’ I have to disagree to such a ‘Man Day.’ I know some men who deserve the day and other so-called men who don’t and should have ‘Lazya?? Day’ named for them!By What?

Why did we not hear more about this? Can we plan one for next month? Better yet lets celebrate MAN DAY once a month, for starters.By Joe

National Man Day. I like it. Too many men are wusses nowadays. It’s good to have a day to remember how to be a man again.By Bob540

I think that if you have to call a day “Man Day”, then men are really in trouble. When my father was alive, every day around our house was his day. Now, men are more like one of the kids in the family, or not even in the family. Yes, men today are eunuchs.By Tammy

The mid-west is retarded. We’ve been doing this in the Jersey Shore since like 2002, but way cooler. No self-respecting MAN DAY should even remotely feature volunteer work !?!? My gad, that is horrific.
