Cooper on Lakota West’s fast start
Lakota West High’s boys soccer team is off to a sizzling 4-0 start to the 2009 season.
That, in turn, has earned the Firebirds a No. 4 ranking in the first Division I state poll.
“It’s been a good start,” West coach Rick Cooper said. “We’ve played well. The kids have done a really good job. We don’t have a superstar kid. We send out 11 quality kids. We stay organized defensively. The kids have done their jobs. They have all come to embrace what their responsibility is and taken that on and done good things with it.”
The Firebirds have yet to allow a goal this season in wins over Turpin (3-0), Worthington Kilbourne (1-0), Moeller (1-0) and St. Xavier (2-0).
“It’s early,” Cooper said of his club’s state ranking. “If you have success early on in Cincinnati, somebody’s going to get that ranking. It’s about where you are at the end of the year. If we’re ranked high at the end of the year, that’s a good thing. Being ranked high now doesn’t mean a whole lot to us.”
West travels to Middletown on Thursday night, Sept. 10.
