Rich Franklin and Dustin Hazelett, UFC fighters who both live in West Chester Twp., were today named finalists in the 2009 World MMA Awards.

The World MMA Awards, operated by Fighters Only magazine, are the leading industry awards for the sport of mixed martial arts. The month-long nominate stage will now be followed by a two-month voting stage that closes Dec. 5.

Franklin earned a nomination for Fight of the Year, and Hazelett is a finalist for Submission of the Year.

Franklin was specifically nominated for his June fight with Wanderlei Silva at UFC 99, which took place in Cologne, Germany, and aired on pay-per-view. Franklin won the hotly contested fight via close unanimous decision.

Hazelett&amp;#8217;s nomination stemmed from a November 2008 victory over Tamdan McCrory at UFC 91. Hazelett, who&amp;#8217;s one of the welterweight division&amp;#8217;s fastest-rising contenders, used a slick first-round arm-bar to pick up the victory (as well as a $60,000 Submission of the Night bonus from the UFC). Like Franklin, Hazelett trains at Jorge Gurgel&amp;#8217;s MMA facility in West Chester.

Voting (in 18 different categories) for the World MMA Awards is now underway at www.worldmmaawards.com. Winners will be revealed at a Dec. 30 ceremony in Las Vegas that airs live on Versus.com (and via delay on Versus throughout January).

<title>OSU legend Mark Coleman out of UFC 106</title>

An injury has forced Mark Coleman out one of his biggest career fights on one of the year&amp;#8217;s biggest mixed-martial-arts cards.

Coleman, a former NCAA Division I national wrestling champion at Ohio State University, was slated to fight ex-UFC champ Tito Ortiz on Nov. 21 at UFC 106 in Las Vegas. The fight was the pay-per-view broadcast&amp;#8217;s co-main event behind the headliner of UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin.

However, a knee injury (torn MCL) has forced the 44-year-old Coleman off the card.

Ortiz first broke the news on Twitter and said Coleman &amp;#8220;sissied&amp;#8221; out of the fight. However, the injury is legit and will likely keep Coleman out until 2010.

No replacement has been named.

The fight was supposed to be Coleman&amp;#8217;s first since he upset Stephan Bonnar at UFC 100 in July.

Coleman was an early UFC fighter and the organization&amp;#8217;s first-ever heavyweight champion. But he left the UFC in 1999 to fight in Japan, where MMA was more lucrative at the time. However, in 2008, Coleman was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame and promptly announced he had signed a new deal with the UFC. After a lackluster loss to Mauricio &amp;#8220;Shogun&amp;#8221; Rua in his return fight in January, many dismissed Coleman. But the Bonnar victory earned him a second life.

Coleman, a former heavyweight, dropped to 205 pounds for his recent UFC fights and recently told the Dayton Daily News he&amp;#8217;s in the best shape of his career, thanks to his new training camp in Las Vegas.

<title>After latest win, Kennedy proves marketable contender for Strikeforce</title>

Tim Kennedy (11-2) delivered previously un-beaten Zak Cummings (11-1) his first career loss and improved his stock in Strikeforce&amp;#8217;s intriguing middleweight division in the main event of the Friday, Sept. 25, Strikeforce Challengers event.

The show took place at the SpiritBank Event Center in Bixby, Okla., just outside of Tulsa, and aired on Showtime.

Kennedy easily scored takedowns and battered his opponent with an effective ground-and-pound assault. After nearly ending the fight with a standing guillotine, Kennedy ultimately forced the second-round tap-out via north-south choke.

Kennedy, a member of the Army&amp;#8217;s Special Forces who recently signed on with the Texas National Guard so he could continue fighting full-time, has proven he can hang with the world&amp;#8217;s top 185-pounders. He&amp;#8217;s a well-spoken, insightful American hero who has a great story about joining the military following the events of 9/11.

As Strikeforce uses its Showtime and CBS deals to nip at the heels of the UFC, Kennedy could be one of the organization&amp;#8217;s most marketable stars.

In other action at Friday&amp;#8217;s event, former U.S. Olympic wrestling team captain Daniel Cormier (1-0) made a successful pro MMA debut and stopped a game Gary Frazier (0-1) with punches in the second round. Cormier, though, is still green and needs to quickly pick up some jiu jitsu to take advantage of his ability of taking the fight to the ground.

Welterweight prospect Tyron Woodley (4-0), a former University of Missouri All-American wrestler, again was impressive as he shut down Zach Light (6-9) via submission. Woodley is explosive, athletic and quick. And if Strikeforce doesn&amp;#8217;t rush the youngster along too quickly, he could prove to be the real deal.

The full results from Friday&amp;#8217;s event included:

Tim Kennedy def. Zak Cummings via submission (north-south choke) - Round 2, 2:43

Ray Sefo def. Kevin Jordan via TKO (injury) - Round 2, 0:24

Tyron Woodley def. Zach Light via submission (armbar) - Round 2, 3:38

Thomas Longacre def. Travis Calanoc via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Daniel Cormier def. Gary Frazier via TKO (punches) - Round 2, 3:39

Jeri Sitzes def. Lacey Schuckman via TKO (punches) - Round 3, 2:18

Paul Bradley def. Levi Avera via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Trey Houston def. Brandon Gaines via submission (arm-triangle choke) - Round 2, 1:28

Kenny Giddens def. Jon Carson via submission (D&amp;#8217;arce choke) - Round 2, 4:15

Josh Pulsifer def. Nick Gibbons via submission (D&amp;#8217;arce choke) - Round 1, 1:05

Dillon Smith def. Lemont Davis via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 1, 1:15

Two-time NFL Pro Bowler and 1982 Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker has signed a deal the mixed-martial-arts promotion Strikeforce and will make his pro MMA debut sometime in early 2010, the organization today announced.

Walker is 47 years old, which isn&amp;#8217;t exactly working in his favor.

Also not working in his favor? Walker has no professional fighting experience, though Strikeforce executives say the famed running back holds a fifth degree black belt in the martial art Tae Kwon Do.

Still, from a marketing standpoint, it&amp;#8217;s not a bad move for Strikeforce, which recently signed a deal to air quarterly shows on CBS (with the rest of its events airing on Showtime). Walker&amp;#8217;s name alone should pull in some viewers and help ticket sales. Many major outlets, including ESPN, and the MMA media covered the story today, so it&amp;#8217;s also providing the organization some publicity.

However, Walker isn&amp;#8217;t anywhere ready for the sport&amp;#8217;s top fighters, and Strikeforce officials will have to work diligently (and strategically) to find an opponent that provides a fair match-up while also maintaining some sense of legitimacy.

Walker isn&amp;#8217;t the only former NFL player to try MMA. Four players (including former No. 1 draft pick Marcus Jones) appear on the current 10th season of the UFC&amp;#8217;s reality show, &amp;#8220;The Ultimate Fighter,&amp;#8221; on Spike TV And Others such as former Cincinnati Bengal Michael Westbrook and Indianapolis Colt Rex Richards have actually had pretty successful careers.

DALLAS - A grazing punch hit Rich Franklin in the top of the head. He saw stars. He dropped to the mat. And he remembers little else.

The former UFC middleweight champion suffered another setback on Saturday, Sept. 19, and dropped a first-round TKO loss to fellow ex-champ Vitor Belfort.

Their fight, held at a catch-weight of 195 pounds, was part of a 13-fight lineup at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. Two fights aired on Spike TV and the main card, including the Franklin vs. Belfort headliner, was available on pay-per-view.

Both fighters largely played it safe in the first few minutes of the main event fight. Each bounced in and out of the pocket and rarely threw or connected on more than a few punches in each spurt. In fact, it was a seemingly innocent shot that did the most damage.

Nearly three minutes into the round, Belfort connected with a looping left hand that grazed the top of his opponent&amp;#8217;s head. The blow wobbled Franklin, who fell to the mat, and Belfort quickly followed with a barrage of punches before Franklin could ever shake off the cobwebs.

&amp;#8220;Once you get clipped, everything goes blank,&amp;#8221; Franklin, who&amp;#8217;s now lost two his past three to drop to 25-5, said after the fight. &amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;m sure things, bits and pieces, will come back once I get back to the locker room.

The ending shocked the soldout crowd of 17,428, most of whom were clearly supporting Franklin, who headlined his third UFC card of the year.

Belfort (19-8), who returned to the UFC for the first time in more than four years, picked up his fifth straight win with the victory, which came at the 3:02 mark of the first round. In the night&amp;#8217;s post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White didn&amp;#8217;t rule out the possibility of Belfort getting a shot at current middleweight champion Anderson Silva in his next bout.

As for Franklin, White praised his loyalty and said the former high school math teacher &amp;#8220;will always have a home in the UFC.&amp;#8221;

But what does Franklin want?

&amp;#8220;Losing definitely wasn&amp;#8217;t part of my plans,&amp;#8221; he said. &amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;m going to have to let the dust settle and figure that out.&amp;#8221;

OFFICIAL UFC 103 RESULTS:

Vitor Belfort def. Rich Franklin via TKO (strikes) - Round 1, 3:02

Junior Dos Santos def. Mirko &amp;#8220;Cro Cop&amp;#8221; Filipovic via submission (verbal) - Round 3, 2:00

Paul Daley def. Martin Kampmann via TKO (punches) - Round 1, 2:31

Josh Koscheck def. Frank Trigg via TKO (punches) - Round 1, 1:25

Tyson Griffin def. Hermes Franca via knockout (punches) - Round 2, 3:26

Efrain Escudero def. Cole Miller via TKO (punches) - Round 1, 3:36

Tomasz Drwal def. Drew McFedries via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 2, 1:03

Jim Miller def. Steve Lopez via TKO (injury) - Round 2, 0:48

Nick Lentz def. Rafaello Oliveira via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

DALLAS - The Dayton Daily News is on scene for tonight&amp;#8217;s UFC 103 event at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.

Tonight&amp;#8217;s event features a main event of former UFC middleweight champion and West Chester Twp. resident Rich Franklin (27-4) vs. fellow ex-champ Vitor Belfort (18-8) at a catch-weight of 195 pounds.

The 13-fight lineup includes six un-aired preliminary cards (6:20 p.m.), two fights on Spike TV (9 p.m.) and then the night&amp;#8217;s five-fight lineup on pay-per-view (10 p.m.).

Refresh often; live updates will be posted throughout the evening.

Rob Emerson (10-8) vs. Rafael dos Anjos (12-4)

RESULT: Rob Emerson used an effective sprawl to avoid much of his opponent&amp;#8217;s ground game, but Rafael dos Anjos slowed the former cast member of &amp;#8220;The Ultimate Fighter 5&amp;#8221; with a series of devastating inside leg kicks to slow his opponent and score some late-fight takedowns. Although a lot closer than the judges&amp;#8217; scores would indicated, dos Anjos picked up the unanimous-decision victory with shutout scores of 30-27 on all three cards. Rafael Dos Anjos def. Rob Emerson via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Igor Pokrajac (21-6) vs. Vladimir Matyushenko (22-5)

RESULT: After the UFC struck a deal with Affliction Entertainment and picked up most of the company&amp;#8217;s roster of fighters back in July, Vladimir Matyushenko returned to the UFC for the first time in six years. Although the fight did little to please the Dallas crowd, the &amp;#8220;Janitor&amp;#8221; won all three rounds and topped Igor Pokrajac, a sparring partner of co-main-event fighter Mirko &amp;#8220;Cro Cop&amp;#8221; Filipovic, via unanimous decision. Vladimir Matyushenko def. Igor Pokrajac via unanimous decision (30-27, 20-27, 30-27)

Jason Brilz (17-1-1) vs. Eliot Marshall (7-2)

RESULT: After two fairly lackluster bouts before it, Jason Brilz vs. Eliot Marshall did little to re-energize the crowd with a sloppy and slow-paced stand-up affair. In an indication of just how difficult the light-heavyweight bout was to score, each fighter earned the shutout victory on one judge&amp;#8217;s card. Eliot Marshall def. Jason Brilz via split decision (30-28, 27-30, 30-27)

Brian Foster (12-4) vs. Rick Story (8-3)

RESULT: The night&amp;#8217;s first crowd-pleaser came via courtesy of Brian Foster and Rick Story, who kept a frantic pace throughout the first round of their lightweight bout. Despite suffering an apparent broken nose in that round, Story took control in the second, scored a takedown and locked in a fight-ending choke. Rick Story def. Brian Foster via submission (arm-triangle choke) - Round 1, 1:09

Rafaello Oliveira (9-1) vs. Nick Lentz (19-3-1)

RESULT: After a close first round, Nick Lentz took control in the second and used a steady mix of stand-up and ground fighting to wear down fellow UFC newcomer Rafaello Oliveira. Lentz, who entered the UFC as a replacement for injured Dan Lauzon, fired off a variety of submission attempts but ultimately suffered for the decision win, which pushed his current win streak to seven. Nick Lentz def. Rafaello Oliveira via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)

Steve Lopez (12-2) vs. Jim Miller (15-2)

RESULT: Steve Lopez&amp;#8217;s only reprieve from Jim Miller&amp;#8217;s five-minute-plus offensive onslaught came in the form of a dislocated shoulder. Miller, now 4-1 in the UFC&amp;#8217;s deep 155-pound division, battered the lightweight UFC newcomer with big blows, including a body kick that stunned Lopez late in the first round. But when Lopez tried to counter with a left jab early in the second round, his shoulder popped out of place and forced a TKO stoppage due to the injury. Jim Miller def. Steve Lopez via TKO (injury) - Round 2, 0:48

Tomasz Drwal (17-2) vs. Drew McFedries (8-6)

RESULT: After moving from light heavyweight down to middleweight, Tomasz Drwal showed no ill signs from the drop and easily handled Drew McFedries in the opening bout on Spike TV. Drwal did damage late in the first round and locked in a choke that was spoiled by the bell. But after forcing the fight to the mat early in the second round, he finally forced the tap-out. Tomasz Drwal def. Drew McFedries via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 2, 1:03

Cole Miller (15-3) vs. Efrain Escudero (12-0)

RESULT: Despite dealing with a significant height and reach disadvantage, Efrain Escudero, the lightweight winner of &amp;#8220;The Ultimate Fighter 8,&amp;#8221; avoided Cole Miller&amp;#8217;s dangerous ground game and ultimately connected on a brutal combination of punches late in the first round. The knockout victory pushes the rising prospect&amp;#8217;s record to a perfect 13-0. Efrain Escudero def. Cole Miller via TKO (punches) - Round 1, 3:36

Hermes Franca (20-8) vs. Tyson Griffin (14-2)

RESULT: While no doubt an exciting fighter who&amp;#8217;s posted an unbelievable five Fight of the Night award performances in just five career UFC fights, Tyson Griffin was often criticized as a non-finisher. However, behind the power of a straight right that dropped his opponent, Griffin laid out former top UFC lightweight contender Hermes Franca and delivered additional blows to force a TKO stoppage in the second round of their PPV opener. Tyson Griffin def. Hermes Franca via knockout (punches) - Round 2, 3:26

Frank Trigg (19-7) vs. Josh Koscheck (15-4)

RESULT: In a matchup of former collegiate wrestling standouts, Edinboro University&amp;#8217;s former NCAA Division I national champion and four-time All-American Josh Koscheck popped University of Oklahoma All-American Frank Trigg with a right hand that sent the fighter to the mat. Koscheck followed with additional blows to force the swift TKO stoppage over Trigg, who was fighting in the UFC for the first time since 2005. Josh Koscheck def. Frank Trigg via TKO (punches) - Round 1, 1:25

Paul Daley (22-8-2) vs. Martin Kampmann (15-3)

RESULT: MMA veteran Paul Daley has competed in most of the world&amp;#8217;s top promotions, and he didn&amp;#8217;t disappoint in his long-awaited UFC debut. The British fighter popped and dazed top welterweight contender Martin Kampmann with a big left hand midway through the first round. Kampmann ate an additional dozen shots, and though he remained standing, he was clearly out on his feet, which forced the referee to rightfully stop the fight. Paul Daley def. Martin Kampmann via TKO (punches) - Round 1, 2:31

Junior Dos Santos (19-8) vs. Mirko &amp;#8220;Cro Cop&amp;#8221; Filipovic (24-7-2)

RESULT: Junior Dos Santos picked up the biggest win of his career and moved into serious title contention with a second-round TKO victory over the quickly fading Mirko &amp;#8220;Cro Cop&amp;#8221; Filipovic. Although once of the world&amp;#8217;s best fighters and most feared strikers, Filipovic again looked sluggish and ultimately verbally submitted when a punch blurred his vision and left him unable to continue. Junior Dos Santos def. Mirko &amp;#8220;Cro Cop&amp;#8221; Filipovic via submission (verbal) - Round 2, 2:00

Vitor Belfort (19-8) vs. Rich Franklin (27-5)

RESULT: After little action in the first few minutes of the main-event fight, Vitor Belfort connected on a clean left to drop Rich Franklin midway through the first round and then continued the barrage, which included some obviously illegal shots to the back of his opponent&amp;#8217;s head. By then, though, Franklin was already dazed and unable to defend himself, and the referee had no choice but to declare the TKO stoppage. Vitor Belfort def. Rich Franklin via TKO (strikes) - Round 1, 3:02

<title>Franklin&apos;s UFC 103 opponent struggles to make weight</title>

An immensely hard-to-predict UFC 103 main event fight between Rich Franklin and Vitor Belfort may have swayed into the local fighter&amp;#8217;s favor.

Franklin, who headlines Saturday&amp;#8217;s UFC 103 event at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, had no trouble making weight at Friday&amp;#8217;s official fighter weigh-ins.

The West Chester Twp. resident&amp;#8217;s opponent, though, struggled mightily.

Despite recently fighting at 185 pounds and agreeing to fight Franklin (25-4 MMA, 12-3 UFC) at a catchweight of 195 pounds, Belfort (18-8 MMA, 7-4 UFC) struggled to make the 196-pound limit (most state commissions allow a one-pound &amp;#8220;buffer&amp;#8221; during weigh-ins).

Belfort initially weighed 197.5 pounds and got as light as 196.25 pounds while shedding clothes during his initial trip to the scale. Fighters who fail to make weight receive an additional hour to make the cutoff, and Belfort needed most of it to drop the quarter pound.

A tough weight cut is never a good sign for a fighter. Despite having 24 hours to rehydrate by fight night, fighters sometimes need days to truly recover from a hard cut.

UFC officials keep a close eye on their fighters and their weights throughout fight weeks, and rarely does a single event participant struggle. But three fighters from Saturday&amp;#8217;s card, which airs on Spike TV (9 p.m.) and pay-per-view (10 p.m.), struggled. Belfort and Efrain Escudero eventually made weight, but Hermes Franca had to get approval (and give up a portion of his fight purse) to change his 155-pound contest with opponent Tyson Griffin to a catchweight fight of 159 pounds.

The full weigh-in results included:

MAIN CARD (Pay-per-view)

Vitor Belfort (196) vs. Rich Franklin (195)

Junior Dos Santos (236) vs. Mirko &amp;#8220;Cro Cop&amp;#8221; Filipovic (226)

Paul Daley (170) vs. Martin Kampmann (169.5)

Frank Trigg (170.25) vs. Josh Koscheck (170)

Hermes Franca (159) vs. Tyson Griffin (155.5)

PRELIMINARY CARD (Spike TV)

Cole Miller (155) vs. Efrain Escudero (156)

Tomasz Drwal (185) vs. Drew McFedries (185.25)

PRELIMINARY CARD (Un-aired)

Steve Lopez (154.5) vs. Jim Miller (154.5)

Rafaello Oliveira (155.25) vs. Nick Lentz (155)

Brian Foster (170.75) vs. Rick Story (170)

Jason Brilz (205.25) vs. Eliot Marshall (204.75)

Igor Pokrajac (203) vs. Vladimir Matyushenko (205)

<title>UFC won&apos;t return to Columbus in 2010</title>

Despite three consecutive shows that scored some of the biggest crowds in the promotion&amp;#8217;s history, the Ultimate Fighting Championship will not return to Columbus for a fourth show in 2010.

Beginning in 2007, the UFC hosted an annual pay-per-view event at Nationwide Arena in conjunction with the Arnold Sports Festival, a popular three-day sports and fitness exhibition.

However, at a press conference for this weekend&amp;#8217;s UFC 103 event, UFC president Dana White said a fourth show isn&amp;#8217;t on the calendar for 2010.

The news should come as a surprise to Ohio MMA fans, especially since White vowed to return.

&amp;#8220;We love Columbus,&amp;#8221; White said during Columbus&amp;#8217; festivities for UFC 96 in March. &amp;#8220;Every year we&amp;#8217;ve been here, we&amp;#8217;ve been successful. We plan to keep going back every year and making this a regular thing.&amp;#8221;

However, the UFC&amp;#8217;s plans to tap into new markets has apparently forced the change.

The UFC made its Ohio (and Midwest) debut in 2007 with UFC 68, which featured Randy Couture&amp;#8217;s upset of Tim Sylvia for the UFC heavyweight title. The event set a still-standing U.S. MMA attendance record (19,049) and shattered the Nationwide Arena record with a $3 million gate. The following year, the UFC returned to Columbus for UFC 82 (headlined by Anderson Silva vs. Dan Henderson), which drew 16,043 for a $2.2 million gate. And this year, UFC 96, headlined by Quinton Jackson vs. Keith Jardine, drew another 17,033 attendees for a $1.8 million gate.

Mixed martial arts will again air live on U.S. network television following today&amp;#8217;s announcement that Strikeforce, arguably the top MMA promotion behind the Ultimate Fighting Championship, has struck a deal with CBS.

The first event, headlined by Fedor Emelianenko (30-1) vs. fellow heavyweight Brett Rogers (10-0), airs Nov. 7, though no location or venue have been officially announced.

CBS was the first major U.S. network to air MMA. However, the Tiffany Network hitched its wagon to EliteXC, a poorly run promotion that burned through tens of millions of dollars and collapsed after just three CBS shows in 2008.

Strikeforce, though, has staying power, and with the TV deal, could present a serious challenge to the UFC&amp;#8217;s top-dog status over time.

Strikeforce technically aired on network television before, but its deal with NBC provided taped highlights packages in late-night timeslots and isn&amp;#8217;t believed to have been a revenue generator for the organization.

However, the combination of CBS and Strikeforce&amp;#8217;s other broadcast partner, Showtime, should give the promotion a lot of upcoming exposure.

But don&amp;#8217;t count out the UFC, which currently airs on pay-per-view and Spike TV. UFC president Dana White recently promised the UFC will have its own network deal within 12 months.

Nate Diaz picked up a &amp;#8220;Submission of the Night&amp;#8221; bonus for disposing of Melvin Guillard in the main event, and former Ohio high school state wrestling champion Gray Maynard moved deeper into lightweight title contention with a decision victory over Roger Huerta in the co-main event this past Wednesday, Sept. 16, at UFC Fight Night 19.

The event took place at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City.

Four of the night&amp;#8217;s 10 bouts, including the co-headliners, aired on Spike TV.

Diaz (11-4), a top prospect who won the fifth season of the UFC&amp;#8217;s reality series &amp;#8220;The Ultimate Fighter,&amp;#8221; snapped a two-fight losing streak with the second-round submission victory, which came via guillotine choke. Proving old habits die hard, Guillard (22-8-2) suffered a loss for the seventh time (out of eight career defeats) via submission.

Maynard, meanwhile, moved to 8-0 with his unanimous decision win. The fighter, who won his state title at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, previously has been criticized as a &amp;#8220;lay and pray&amp;#8221; fighter (like many former wrestlers), but the undefeated fighter showed a vastly improved stand-up game in the win.

Huerta (20-3-1), who fought for the first time in 13 months, likely competed in the UFC for the final time. He concluded the terms of his UFC contract with the fight and plans to continue his acting and modeling careers.

In other action, Nate Quarry (12-3) and Tim Credeur (12-3) opened the night&amp;#8217;s broadcast with an epic three-round, back-and-forth brawl, which ultimately went to Quarry via unanimous decision. Both fighters earned $30,000 &amp;#8220;Fight of the Night&amp;#8221; bonus checks for the effort. In addition to Diaz&amp;#8217;s $30,000 Submission of the Night award, preliminary-card fighter Jeremy Stephens (16-5) earned a $30,000 Knockout of the Night award for his brutal TKO of Justin Buccholz (8-4).

Also of note was a victory for C.B. Dollaway (9-2), who&amp;#8217;s also a former Ohio state wrestling champion. Dollaway, who won his title with Northmor High School in Mount Gilead, topped UFC newcomer Jay Silva (5-2) via unanimous decision.

The full results included:

MAIN CARD
Nate Diaz def. Melvin Guillard via submission (guillotine choke) - Round 2, 2:13
Gray Maynard def. Roger Huerta via split decision (28-29, 30-27, 30-27)
Carlos Condit def. Jake Ellenberger via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
Nate Quarry def. Tim Credeur via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-27, 29-28)

PRELIMINARY CARD
Brian Stann def. Steve Cantwell via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
Mike Pyle def. Chris Wilson via submission (guillotine choke) - Round 3, 2:15
C.B. Dollaway def. Jay Silva via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
Jeremy Stephens def. Justin Buchholz via TKO (doctor&amp;#8217;s stoppage, cut) - Round 1, 3:23
Mike Pierce def. Brock Larson via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Ryan Jensen def. Steve Steinbeiss via technical submission (guillotine choke) - Round 1, 3:56

<content type="application/xhtml+xml" xml:space="preserve">
Shine Fights, an Ohio-based mixed-martial-arts organization headed by Ohio State MBA graduate Devin Price, today signed veteran boxer Ricardo Mayorga to an MMA contract.

The organization, which hosted its second-ever event in Miami, Fla., this past weekend, will likely feature Mayorga&amp;#8217;s pro MMA debut in early 2010.

Mayorga isn&amp;#8217;t the first boxer to move into MMA - Indianapolis&amp;#8217; Chris Lytle, K.J. Noons, Terry Martin and others have both boxed and fought MMA professionally - but, like Ray Mercer, he&amp;#8217;s definitely one of the biggest names to make the transition.

&amp;#8220;I&amp;#8217;m going after some tough competition for Mayorga because I don&amp;#8217;t want it to look like we&amp;#8217;re trying to feed him guppies,&amp;#8221; Shine Fights matchmaker Ron Foster told MMAjunkie.com. &amp;#8220;He says he wants to fight for real, so let&amp;#8217;s let him fight. He said, &amp;#8216;I&amp;#8217;m from the streets. I&amp;#8217;m a real fighter. I&amp;#8217;m bored with boxing, and I want to fight.&amp;#8217;&amp;#8221;

Mayorga, who turns 36 next month, has racked up a 29-7-1 boxing record during a career that included WBA/WBC welterweight and WBC junior middleweight titles. The Nicaraguan, though, is just 3-4 since 2003. And the fact that he apparently still smokes after his fights and has little if any MMA training probably doesn&amp;#8217;t help in a sport that&amp;#8217;s so physically demanding.

Still, though, in an industry dominated by the UFC and crowded with regional promotions, Shine Fights grabbed some headlines and stood out a bit from the pack with the Mayorga signing.

Whether Mayorga wins or loses, it&amp;#8217;s a good publicity move for the upstart promotion.

One of the UFC&amp;#8217;s biggest fights of 2009 has been postponed because former light heavyweight champion Quinton &amp;#8220;Rampage&amp;#8221; Jackson has landed the role of B. A. Baracus in a film remake of &amp;#8220;The A-Team.&amp;#8221;

The A-Team&amp;#8221; aired in the 1980s, and Jackson&amp;#8217;s role was first popularized by Mr. T.

Jackson recently served as a coach on the 10th season of &amp;#8220;The Ultimate Fighter,&amp;#8221; the UFC&amp;#8217;s popular reality-show competition that debuts Sept. 16 on Spike TV. Fellow ex-champ Rashad Evans served as a rival coach, but the traditional (and already heavily hyped) coach vs. coach fight is now on hold.

That fight was expected to headline UFC 107 on Dec. 12, when the UFC heads to Jackson&amp;#8217;s hometown of Memphis, Tenn. The event was essentially tailor-made for the fighter, and at a recent UFC event, UFC president Dana White didn&amp;#8217;t hold back when asked about Jackson&amp;#8217;s side gig.

&amp;#8220;I hate it with a [expletive] passion,&amp;#8221; White said when asked about UFC fighters who take movie roles. &amp;#8220;&amp;#8216;You&amp;#8217;re a fighter; you&amp;#8217;re not a movie star.&amp;#8217; It&amp;#8217;s so [expletive] funny because fighters want to be movie stars, and movie stars want to act like they&amp;#8217;re fighters. &amp;#8216;Get a [expletive] grip. You&amp;#8217;re a fighter, and you&amp;#8217;re a [expletive] movie star. Alright?&amp;#8217;&amp;#8221;

UFC 107 is now headlined by a UFC lightweight title fight between champion B.J. Penn and challenger Diego Sanchez.

&amp;#8220;The A-Team,&amp;#8221; which also stars Liam Neeson and Bradley Cooper, is slated for a June 2010 release.

<content type="application/xhtml+xml" xml:space="preserve">
Citing the loss of main-event fighter Benson Henderson because of an injury, World Extreme Cagefighting recently canceled its Sept. 2 show, which was slated for the Covelli Center in Youngstown.

In the official announcement, WEC officials said the event will instead take place Oct. 10, though no location has been determined.

That doesn&amp;#8217;t bode well for Ohio, which expected to host its first-ever WEC event. (The WEC is the UFC&amp;#8217;s sister promotion, which airs on Versus and focuses on the sport&amp;#8217;s lighter weight classes.)

The Dayton Daily News spoke to Ohio Athletic Commission executive director Bernie Profato just hours before the WEC announced the cancellation. At the time, Profato made no mention of a cancellation and said he planned to be in Youngstown next week for the nationally televised event.

Despite rumors of slow ticket sales and the potential loss of DirecTV as a broadcast partner on Sept. 1, WEC General Manager Reed Harris told MMAjunkie.com Radio on Tuesday neither factored into the decision.

Instead, Harris said, the loss of a headliner was the only reason. Henderson (9-1) was slated to fight fellow contender Donald Cerrone (10-1) for the WEC&amp;#8217;s interim lightweight title. (Current champ Jamie Varner is sidelined with injuries.) And despite a 10-bout lineup and four-fight televised card, Versus and WEC officials felt the cancellation of Cerrone vs. Henderson was just too big of a loss and could doom ratings.

WEC officials first spoke about the possibility of making an Ohio debut in April. Officials, including Harris, pointed to Ohio&amp;#8217;s strong MMA fan base (the state regulates more MMA shows than any other U.S. commission) and strong TV ratings for other WEC shows.
