Students face criminal charges for food fight

Three Middletown students face criminal charges for planning a food fight at Middletown High School Friday.

The district’s communications specialist, Debbie Alberico confirmed today that three students were charged in addition to receiving suspensions.

Alberico said one of the reasons the students were charged was because they had planned the food fight in advance.

One of the students’ mothers contacted The Journal. She said that her son was charged with disorderly conduct and suspended for four days, reduced from ten originally. She also said she was told there was a videotape of the incident but that she wouldn’t be able to see it unless it went to court.

Police said today that the report about the incident had not been completed yet.

I asked Alberico about the tape. She said she didn’t know of any tape but that the school does have surveillance cameras. She said those tapes are erased.

Do you think criminal charges are too much for a food fight or do you think the premeditation justifies it?

These are highschool kids and should darn well know better than to plan something so stupid. Some lessons in life are learned the hard way! If criminal charges seem too harsh then maybe they would be better served by being made to plan something that has meaning like birthday party for a less fortunate child, or plan on doing lawn clean up for a senior citizen. These kids need to be taught to focus on all things positive not negative.

i think you guys need to quit being so harsh it was a food fight for christ sake!!!! i was there & i found it quite funny as did others this school needs to focus more on the gang violence & kids getting high & getting jumped in the bathrooms rather than a food fight all three that were charged were my friends & i personally think its ridiculous!!!!! that goes on there permanent record the poor principals were upset because they actually had to get off there behinds & do something for once!!!!

When Corporal Punishment was eliminated in the Midd. schools years ago, the environment was set for the students to “break the rules”. Now, with multiple handslaps and stand in the corner “timeouts”, the kids are laughing at the system. When the school authorities gave into the parents of the troublemakers based on potential lawsuits from disciplining the problem kids, they removed any ounce of controlling power they once had. Never should have given in to the worthless parents with the bratty kids.Rules with no muscle yields no respect.

Ashley- we got the message after the first post. Really didn’t need the other ten. Yes, it was just a food fight. But, if we let them have their food fight and overlooked that, they would have no respect for rules and the system. Then, after the high school environment, they will enter the working world where rules are set with the end result of losing a job if rules are not respected, which is much more serious than a detention or expulsion at school. If they don’t learn rules now, it will be too late down the road when real life hits them in the face. It’s not a game any longer after high school.Time to grow up.

Sorry to disagree with ya Vet, end of school and a food fight? Make em clean it up. Arrest them , that’s a little overboard. Sounds too harsh. Detention, and a possible short-term suspension. You never had any fun at that age? Life is too short, let them have the fun prior to making them old too soon.

M- Sure I had fun at that age, but don’t remember my fun creating problems at school that got me arrested.Don’t be sorry for disagreeing. It’s your right.I just think that because there isn’t enough discipline in the world today and people seem to get away with alot more than before, that the kinder/gentler mindset is not good for creating responsible people in society. We seem to give people more chances to create more problems in society than we use to and because we might go easy on them, they never feel the “pain” of the crime and laugh at the discipline for the crime. If we got back to “old school” discipline, we would erase the smile on their face after they experienced the outcome.Don’t worry, that won’t happen again as it is no longer politically correct in this pampered world we are trying to create for the kids.We are not doing them any favors by being soft on them.

I typically do not delete comments from the blog unless they are spam or use racial slurs, but I did delete Ashley’s duplicated comments from the blog. I believe that is an error that occurs when you refresh the page repeatedly or do not see the comment posted immediately and hit the submit button again. I just wanted to clarify why I deleted the multiples and assure everyone that I am not in any way sensoring any legitimate comments.
