Football coach salary

A reader sent an e-mail to the Journal today asking why the salary for the football coach has not been published:

“As taxpayers I believe we deserve to know what subject as a teacher he will be teaching and what his salary with benefits will be, also how much is the coaches supplemental contract is worth and does it have additional benefits.”

When a candidate is selected, and possibly even when the field is narrowed a little more, we will be able to give some insight into these very valid questions.

But right now, there are just too many variables out there.

Salaries for teachers are determined by the Middletown Teacher Association’s negotiated agreement with the district. If the selected finalist does join the district’s staff as a teacher, their salary would be determined based on years of experience and education level. There isn’t a set dollar amount that will be applied to the selected candidate and the five finalists have varying levels of experience and education. The amount of the supplemental contract for the position is also based on experience.

And it’s not even a definite that the coach would become a teacher in the district. The candidates hold various educator certifications. Some have been administrators in the past.

With all those variables, it’s difficult to say at this point what the salary would be. But as soon as we can, you’ll have that information too.

I think the issue of the a coaches salary is an issue. I think as a resident of Middletown the we need to go out there and get the best coach out there. Middletown used to be a power house. We have the best players in the state raised there. We need a coach that can make the most troubled kid do right. We need coach Place back. He knew how to take a kid off the street and put them on the field or maybe even a couch that isnt so worried about if a 16 yr old kid is shaved but if he can run the full court press. Pay whatever you need to get the city moving because at the rate it is going all the kids are gonna resort to drugs and guns because they cant find a real coach that will be a mentor and a role model. I say go get Coach Timmons for Basketball and Coach Wells for football. Both coaches have been in the Middies organization for at one point. We shouldve kept them.
