Advanced classes remain at middle schools

Advanced math and language arts courses will be offered at Middletown’s middle schools next year.

Apparently, there has been some perception in the community that some advanced courses would be eliminated at the middle schools next year. Specifically, I had heard from some parents who were concerned about advanced math courses.

Middletown has adopted a pretty aggressive strategy to get all students taking Algebra I prior to entering high school. All schools will be doing this soon, because the legislature passed new requirements last year for core academics that require students to have four credits of math, including Algebra II.

To meet the district’s goal, students will be “doubling up” on math courses next year, when the school returns to an eight period day. So basically, all students will be taking two periods of math each day.

Algebra I will still be available for seventh-grade students, but they would be taking the course with eighth graders, instead of having separate courses fro just the seventh grade kids. Algebra I will be available in eight grade also, as well as Geometry for advanced students, according to Assistant Superintendent Evelyn Altherr.

Advanced Language Arts courses will also be in place next year at Vail and Verity middle schools.

The district mailed letters home Friday about the advanced courses. See the letter, which includes the requirements for eligibility for the advanced courses, after the jump.

To be eligible for Geometry, students must have successfully completed algebra one as a seventh grade student.

You will be notified prior to the start of the school year concerning your child’s eligibility for the above courses. If you have any questions, please contact one of the following:
