First roving meeting scheduled at Amanda

The Middletown board will have its first off-site board meeting next month at Amanda Elementary School.

At tonight’s meeting, Superintendent Steve Price said the work session meeting — the first meeting of each month, held the second Monday of the month — will be held at different schools.

Currently, Highview, Creekview, Amanda and Rosa Parks have the equipment necessary to hold board meetings there, Treasurer Eric Sotzing said, and the district is working now to determine how other schools could be used for board meetings.

The work session meeting currently does not have public commenting, but board President Tyus suggested changing that so the community at each school could give input at those meetings.

This is one of the ways that candidates on the November campaign suggested (this one came from Tyus) to improve a perceived lack of communication between the board and the community. Board members agreed at their retreat to move forward with this.

Board Vice President Katie McNeil suggested a “listening time” before board meetings, when the board would just listen to community members. She said that idea came from her recent trip to the National School Boards Association conference.

What do you think of these ideas? Do you think it would make the board seem more accessible? Do you have any ideas that would help the board improve communications with the community?
