Middletown releases football finalists

In tomorrow’s Journal, my colleague Skip Weaver talks to Middletown Athletic Director Gary Lebo about the five finalists for Middletown’s (D-I) football coaching job.

When Coach Ron Johnson announced last month that he was leaving Middletown to accept a position coaching in Canton, officials said they hoped to have his replacement in place in mid-April. It looks like they are on track at this point to get someone in position in the next few weeks.

Four community groups will interview the five finalists. Find out more after the jump.

One of the candidates is a surprise: Monroe football coach Jason Krause. His name wasn’t on the original list of applicants released last week. Krause has been at the Hornets’ helm for four years and the team has been to the playoffs three times since he took over at Monroe High School (D-III).

Another local coach is also one of the finalists. Madison (D-IV) Football Coach Joel Lauer has been with the Mohawks since 2005.

A Middletown alumnus, Chip Abele, is also on the list. Abele, a Middletown High School grad, is an assistant coach at Hilliard-Davidson High School (D-I).

Current Kenton coach Mike Mauk is also on the list. He’s the father of University of Cincinnati quarterback Ben Mauk and is also the athletic director at Kenton High School (D-III).

And rounding out the five finalists is David Pool. Pool is a former NFL player and currently the head coach at Harmony Community School in Cincinnati.

So what do you think of this list? Any predictions or early favorites?

I’ve heard from some people that they would like to see an alumnus in the position because they hope that the local ties would encourage the coach to stay with the district. I also know that in previous district hires, some community members have pushed for diversity candidates—Pool is the only black finalist, I’m told.
