Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is the 38th annual celebration of the planet we call home, and a day to step back and think about things we can do to preserve and restore our natural resources…

So that’s the official line on Earth Day, but I want to know: what do YOU think about Earth Day?

Is it a time to reflect on accomplishments?

A time to call for more action?

Or something in-between?

Send a post, let us know, then go outside and do something good for the planet.

Something to think about

One thing every community along the Cincinnati-Dayton corridor shares is long, wide and usually spotted with orange barrels.

We’re all connected by the highway.

If not for I-75, I suspect this area would look very different. Which is why a study released today by the University of Cincinnati provides some relevant food for thought.

The study, which used data from the university’s Childhood Allergy and Air Pollution Study, found that 30 percent of schools in the U.S. are within a quarter-mile of a major truck route, exposing students to concentrations of pollutants that could lead to respiratory problems later in life.

Read the study here, then pull out a map of your area and do some research of your own. How close is your home to a major truck route? How about your kids’ school? Any thoughts on how you could reduce exposure to these asthma-causing pollutants, or is it even worth worrying about, in your opinion?
