Hilarious!

Sometimes when I am looking for a random, yet funny story, I search Facebook. Here are two of my favorite group posts from Lakota West.

Apparently, if 7,500 people join this group, student Andrew Phelan will streak down the Main Street of Lakota West. Presumably once that happened, he would get expelled and tossed in juvenile detention. Yet I still find myself chuckling at the thought.

Another hilarious post:

Apparently, Lakota West Students are looking to start a new “extreme sport.” The Lakota Quidditch League.

Here is there description of the Harry Potter airborne sport.

All the positions are the same as in the books, however there are obviously some modifications:

  • All players must keep a broom between their legs at all times

  • When a player is hit with a bludger they must drop whatever ball they may have and freeze for 5 seconds before resuming play. Bludgers may also not be held for more than 5 seconds.

  • The Snitch: the snitch is a cross-country runner or likewise long-distance runner who has a ball attached to them which seekers try to detach, similar to touch football. The snitch gets a head start ahead of other players and is allowed to leave the field as they please, but must return atleast once every 10 minutes to prevent over-elongated game play.

*We will probably mess with the rules a bit, see what works best; there are several different adaptations, so we can mix it up.

Recent News We haven’t figured out meeting times etc. yet, but join the group and then we’ll update you on when to meet. This is just for fun, so join and we can get together whenever works for the most people.

If you want to find out more about muggle Quidditch, you can look on youTube— it’s pretty hilarious. At Middlebury College (VT), it’s really big: the golden snitches dress up in yellow spandex and they had an Intercollegiate World Cup.

Tell Lakota what you think

Kind words can go along way. Did you have a teacher/staff member this year that just amazed you or changed your child’s life?

Lakotaonline launched a space to have students and parents tell them about favorite staff members. People can go online to write about an administrator, cafeteria or media assistant, etc. This is a place to show how much you appreciate them as this year comes to a close.

In other news, The Community Engagement Focus Groups just wrapped up from the five sessions conducted last month. The data from these sessions will be compiled and findings released soon. In addition, the district is preparing to host a field survey of 400 residents to ask questions about the district. The qualitative (focus groups) data and quantitative (phone survey) data are to be looked at as one package to help them identify ways in which they can engage our community. The community relations office will use this information to create the district’s strategic plan for the community relations.

Race in Lakota

This topic of racism seems to pop up again and again in Lakota. I am sure it happens elsewhere, but it definitely has taken this district by storm this past year or two.

Monday, two staff members resigned for making racist comments about other staff members as well as bad-mouthing the district’s efforts to increase diversity among staff.

It doesn’t take much to look back on all the other incidents from the play “Ten Little Indians” to a teacher segregating students at Ridge Elementary. We had an incident with a coach and a referee and with a principal and student punishment.

What do you think it will take to get everyone on the same page when it comes to race? Starting Sunday in the Hamilton Journal-News and Thursday in the Pulse-Journal, you will see a series relating to how schools in Butler County are handling this race issue. The achievement gap in Ohio is growing. Districts are taking various approaches to combat this problem of institutionalized racism.

Read closely next week and let us know what you think.

Creekside students go Green

Can anything be cuter than first-graders running gleefully to neighborhood storm drains placing anti-pollution signs?

No really. It was adorable.

Creekside Elementary students told me why preventing pollution in the water supply would ultimately save sharks and fish. It would keep their school creek cleaner and clean up other bodies of water in Butler County.

I especially loved the creativity they showed when they created garbage pick-up contraptions.

I have photos and a story about the event. I also want to plug the Butler County Soil and Water Conservation District at http://www.stormwaterdistrict.com
