Tippecanoe High School junior goalkeeper Ryan Pignatiello has verbally committed to play soccer at Wright State University.

Pignatiello was a force in the net for the Red Devils (14-5-1) last season. He allowed just five goals, the fewest by any regular goalie in the state. He also posted a school-record 14.5 shutouts in 18.5 games played.

In addition, his goals against average also set a school mark (0.270). He was All-Central Buckeye Conference and All-Area for North Dayton. Tipp (11-0) also won the CBC Kenton title.

He is planning to pursue criminal justice at WSU, focusing on the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Marshals Service.

The Competitive Balance Proposal, an Ohio High School Athletic Association initiative to address a perceived athletic imbalance among member schools, was defeated 339-301 today.

Schools principals voted on the measure from May 1-15. The CBP also failed 332-303 last year.

OHSAA Commissioner Dr. Dan Ross said that he does not plan to pursue the proposal.

“We tried the Competitive Balance Committee’s proposal two years in a row but the schools have spoken,” Ross said in a statement.

“I don’t anticipate getting the committee back together and bringing another proposal back to the membership.

Had the proposal passed, it would have affected how football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball teams were divvied into divisions. As of now, teams will continue to be in divisions based solely on boys or girls student enrollment.

The CBP would have placed teams in divisions based on the combined enrollment/boundary, socioeconomic and tradition factors.

It’s not been often that Trotwood-Madison hasn’t been favored in a high school football game the last couple of seasons. But according to head coach Maurice Douglass, that’s just what the Rams have been tagged with for the 2012 opener.

“We’re going to be an underdog,” he said on Tuesday following the release of the 15th annual Skyline Chili Crosstown Showdown lineup that will kick off the season for several area teams.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to play a team that has that type of ability. We know that they must be a pretty darn good team.”

The Rams, the defending state Division II champions, are paired with University School, a private football power anchored in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. University is a combined 24-2 over the last two seasons, has at least four BCS recruits and was a state runner-up in 2010.

Their pairing is part of 21 games over 10 days. Centerville, Northmont, Springfield, Wayne, Dunbar and Valley View also will participate.

In the second year of a two-year Crosstown contract, the Rams knew that they would be playing University last February, but not the details.

That is the opener of a two-game, final-day showdown at Kings on Sunday, Aug. 26. Moeller will play Gillman (Md.) in the second contest. Those are the only games that feature teams not from Ohio or Kentucky.

Centerville gets a return trip to Cincinnati Elder’s “Pit” on Friday, Aug. 24. On Saturday, Springfield, Northmont and Wayne all play in consecutive games at Welcome Stadium. Dunbar will meet Valley View in the 8:15 p.m. nightcap.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to allow the nation to see what type of players that we have and what kind of program we have at Trotwood,” said Douglass.

The Mason High School baseball team recently found out how much wiggle room exists for games played outside the allotted time frame for the spring season: None.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association hit the Comets up with a maximum fine, suspended an assistant coach and limited the number of games next season for having played too many regular-season games this year.

Most damaging, the Greater Miami Conference champions initially also were ruled ineligible for the playoffs this season. The OHSAA amended that penalty following an appeal by Mason athletic director Scott Stemple.

Mason (19-7) is a No. 1 seed in the Division I sectional and plays GMC rival Hamilton at 5 p.m. today at Lakota West in a sectional final.

Stemple learned of the possible OHSAA rules violation from the Mason coaching staff. He then contacted the OHSAA.

“I am proud of our coaches who have modeled doing the right thing, even when it is difficult,” Stemple said in a statement. “We are about the character shown on and off the field and being good role models for our athletes.”

OHSAA guidelines allow baseball teams to play 27 games within 23 days. Mason adjusted its schedule during a spring trip to Tennesse. The Comets played 25 games within 24 days, one day more than allowed.

The OHSAA upheld three other rulings:

• Mason is limited to 24 games next season.

• Assistant coach Curt Bly is suspended from the postseason this year and also for the first half-dozen games in 2013.

• The athletic department must pay a $2,500 fine.

Stemple said the school did not appeal the violation, only the penalties. Comets head coach Ken Gray was not implicated by the OHSAA. The school also was deemed not guilty of trying to provide a competitive advantage.

The Comets (16-2) won their first GMC title since joining the conference for the 2008 season.

The following is a release:

VANDALIA - Standouts in baseball, basketball, football and more were present May 5 when the inaugural class was inducted into Butler High School’s new Athletic Hall of Fame.

More than 200 people attended the event, which was supported by Butler Athletics, Butler Boosters and the Butler administration. It was made possible in part by a $3,000 donation from the Butler 1961 football team.

“The team set out to raise money to support Butler’s athletics, and generously decided to support the Hall of Fame,” said Stacie Whetstone, the Hall of Fame chairperson.

The class of 2012 was made up of Josh Betts (2001), John Goldsberry (2002), Travis Key (1998), Mike Lawson (1970), Jon LeCrone (1972), Larry Lutz (1962), Lori Penrod (1992), Cory Vance (1997), Jennifer Wenclewicz (1993), and Ray Zawadzki (coach 1968-2004).

Inductees into Butler’s first athletic hall of fame class were John LeCrone (left), Travis Key, Lori Penrod, Larry Lutz, Mike Lawson, Cory Vance, Ray Zawadzki, Jennifer Wenclewicz and Josh Betts. Not present: John Goldsberry.

It was a homecoming of sorts for inductees, especially for those whose professional careers have taken them to other parts of the country or world.

“This is where it all started for me,” said Vance, who played for the Colorado Rockies and the Texas Rangers during his professional career. “Eventually my records (at Butler) will be broken and my name moved aside, but I’ll always be on the Hall of Fame wall next to these other inductees.”

Lutz, who taught and coached for the district during his career, also spoke of his roots at Butler.

“I feel like things have come full circle,” said Lutz. “I started here, taught and coached here, and had a chance to pay forward some of the lessons I learned as an athlete and a student to the students and athletes I taught and coached. Now I am being inducted, and I am very humble, very blessed, and very appreciative to be part of this class.”

All of the inductees used the spotlight to pay tribute to the coaches and family members who helped shape their successes in both athletics and life.

“I still use the lessons I learned on the field,” Wenclewicz said.

Lawson spoke extensively of the influence fellow inductee Zawadzki had on him. “Mr. Z changed my life forever,” he said. “He lit a fire in me.”

While the class of 2012 spans 37 years, the common themes of “home, family and connection” wove them together, Whetstone noted.

“I believe what this class says about our school and community is that regardless of how far they travel, how professionally successful they become, each of these 10 inductees still calls Vandalia home,” Whetstone said. “Each inductee shared their story of how Butler High School and the Vandalia community helped to shape who they are today. There is no better tribute to our community than that.”

It’s a tribute the school hopes will become a tradition, according to Athletic Administrator Ryan Rogers. “We had a very enthusiastic and positive response, and this is a component to our school that was very much needed. It’s an event that we aim to carry forward,” he said.

The Hall of Fame is located on the north wall of the Butler Student Activity Center foyer.

The Hall of Fame committee is actively seeking nominations for next year’s class. Contact the Butler Athletics Department at 415-6384 with suggestions.

<!--

A proposal to add a shot clock for boys and girls high school basketball games was not passed by the National Federation of State High School Associations basketball rules committee.

Located at Indianapolis, the NFHS is the national governing body for all state high school athletic associations. The proposal was rejected last month and announced today.

“In addition to the fact that there is some concern about the costs associated with the use of a shot clock, the committee also expressed a belief that the game is typically played with an up-tempo style even without a shot clock,” said Kent Summers, director of performing arts and sports at the NFHS, in a statement.

“In addition, the committee believes that coaches should have the option of a slower-paced game if they believe it makes their team more competitive in specific situations. This could be especially true for smaller schools with limited budgets, which comprise a significant number of the 18,000 basketball-playing schools. Since the NFHS writes rules for all sizes of schools and teams, it has to consider what is best for the masses.”

Since 1993 in college basketball, the men’s shot clock has been 35 seconds and the women’s 30. The women’s time was cut because there is no back-court violation (10-second rule).

Prior to 1993, both the men’s and women’s college shot clocks were 45 seconds, starting in 1985.

The NBA shot clock is 24 seconds.

The following is a release:

Columbus - Franklin native Darrell Hedric will be inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame on May 19 in Columbus at the 7th Annual Ceremony.

Darrell Hedric enjoyed a long and successful association with Miami University. He was a four-year letter winner who played on three Mid-American Conference championship teams coached by Bill Rohr.

He played for the Akron Goodyear Wingfoots of the National Industrial Basketball League and spent two years in the Navy before returning to Oxford as a graduate assistant for Coach Shrider for the 1957-58 season.

After coaching briefly at Hamilton Taft High School, he became Miami’s first full-time assistant in 1960, serving 10 years under head coaches Shrider and Tates Locke. Named head coach in 1970, he led the Redskins for 14 years, winning 216 games.

His teams won five MAC regular season titles and one post-season tournament while making four NCAA Tournament appearances. One of his finest moments was a stunning 84-81 upset of defending national champion Marquette in the first round of the 1978 NCAA Tournament.

The following is a release:

Columbus - Middletown native Richard Dallmer will be inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame on May 19 in Columbus at the 7th Annual Ceremony.

The University of Cincinnati’s winning basketball tradition began with the contributions of Dallmer when the Bearcats won four straight Mid-American Conference championships from 1947-1950.

A graduate of Hamilton High School, Dallmer not only broke UC’s career scoring record with 1,098 points, but he was an outstanding defensive player and the team leader. He received UC’s most valuable player award three times, a feat only duplicated by Oscar Robertson.

Dallmer scored 353 points in 1948-49 as the Bearcats won 20 games (23-5) for the first time and were ranked 10th in the nation.

He captained the 1949-50 squad that was the first to go unbeaten in Mid-American Conference play. He was first team All-MAC for three years and first team All-Ohio in 1950. Dallmer was selected for an All-American team that faced the Harlem Globetrotters on a nine-game nationwide tour in 1950.

He coached basketball four years each at Lockland and Norwood high schools, winning two Hamilton County League titles at Norwood.

Longtime Centerville High School boys basketball coach Jim Staley has been replaced in that position by former Graham boys coach Brook Cupps.

The Centerville school board on Monday accepted Cupps as coach. He recently resigned that position at Graham, where he also was the athletic director.

“Centerville’s on a short list of places that I would leave Graham for,” said Cupps, a St. Paris native.

“It is an odd situation. I have a lot of respect for Jim and what he’s done with the program. He’s built it basically from scratch.”

It was a stunning exit after 21 mostly winning seasons with the Elks for Staley. He had a 327-158 record at Centerville, with numerous league titles and deep postseason runs.

Staley landed at Centerville after fielding quality teams at Trotwood-Madison. His career record is 540-270, second in the area only to Alter’s Joe Petrocelli, the state’s all-time winningest boys coach.

Staley retired from teaching this year, which by law meant that his coaching job had to be posted. Elks football coach Ron Ullery also retired from the school district following last season. That coaching position also was posted, which Ullery retained.

“They told me that I would not be back,” Staley said. “I am deeply disappointed.”

“Nobody gave me a reason why; that was it. I did not want to give this job up.”

Centerville has gone 12-11, 10-13 and 12-11 this past season since winning its last Greater Western Ohio Conference title in 2009. Cupps was Graham’s head coach the past 12 seasons. The Falcons lost in the D-II state semifinals in 2008.

“What (Staley) has accomplished for Centerville basketball is immeasurable,” Elks AD Rob Dement said. “He put them on the map. But timing is everything.

“To be able to get Brook Cupps to take over the program and build from where we’re at is an awesome opportunity.”
