Smerz leaves Fairborn to become new Beavercreek AD

It’s not often that the incoming athletic director has a say in the out-going AD’s position, but that’s exactly what awaits Jim Smerz.

Smerz has left Fairborn after four years to become the new AD at Beavercreek. He replaces Ed Zink, who retired from teaching this month.

However, Zink still must be approved as the Beavers’ girls basketball coach. That shouldn’t be hard: He’s the only girls coach in Creek program history and is No. 1 in Ohio for all-time wins.

“Ed is a tremendous coach and person,” said Smerz, who was approved by the board of education on Wednesday.

“We’re hoping that he continues on. Every indication is that he will and we want him to be.”

Like many schools, anyone in the district who applies for the coaching position must be first considered. But it’s not automatic for that person to be named. Good luck to the person who would challenge Zink’s coaching position.

Before Fairborn, Smerz was the AD at Miamisburg for 11 years and also spent eight years as an assistant coach for Mike Kelly with the University of Dayton football program.

“They have a great community and have a lot of great facilities,” said Smerz.

“It’s a larger school with a lot of tremendous challenges. I think I can help and hopefully reach some goals that they haven’t reached in the past.”

I hope his first plan is to overhaul the football coach!! He is so awful and disrespectful to his players. He called parents of players last year, and cried how we were not supporting him. Would love to see him go!!

If he gets rid of the football coach, maybe many athletes will return to BHS. It’s a shame so many of our kids left for other schools because of this one man!! Hope Smerz does what’s right for BHS!

Hope he uses his football experience to help our guys. Lord knows that our coach can’t coach or come up with new plays!

Dear Mr. Smerz, PLEASE take a close look at our football program. How can we have a great early learning/training program (Eager Beavers) AND undefeated Middle School teams THEN it ALL falls apart at the HS??

I would challenge Mr Smerz to find 10-15 parents/players who TRULY support the football coach and the job he’s doing….I’ve talked to some of these kids: They WANT to play good ball BUT just don’t have the coaching to get there.

It’s all about the winning mentality and the winning success an AD has accrued over the years. In my opinion, it was a bad hire. Look at the two programs he comes from Miamisburg and Fairborn. Does Beavercreek want to emulate those two school districts? I don’t think so. It’s the little pond and little fish mentality that is killing Beavercreek sports.

Beaverfan:U will be suprised. Smerz has done an excellent job at Fairborn the past 4 years. He has done a great job with what was a below average sports program and has built Fairborn in to a school that is now very competitive. He will be missed at Fairborn.

Agreed. He did a great job at Fairborn. Generally, the district leadership at Fairborn sees sports as expendable, not something that keeps kids academically involved and promotes the school district. Hopefully this will wake them up.

You guys are absolutely clueless. Who are you to say you can do a better job with the football program? Do you even know anything about football? Obviously not. Go back and look at the history of Beavercreek Football, The current head coach is the 3rd winningest coach in school history. if they win one game this year, he will be the 2nd winningest coach. This coach took over a 3-37 program and has turned it into a consistent .500 program. Also Coach has won GWOC coach of the year at 5-5 in 06 and 6-4 in 07 without winning the league. What does that say about him and his staff. I think some people need to do some research before they open there mouth

hsfballfan - I support Creek football and the coach. One problem - last season they were 1-9, which included getting spanked by Princeton, the next last to place team in the GMC. The other problem: 1-14 in the league over the past three seasons. Yes, its a tough league, but 1-14 is pretty rough. Best wishes to the new AD. Looks to me like Beavercreek is getting a good one!

The Coach is replaceable! When he left Kettering the people rejoiced. When asked Kettering parents said “We don’t want him back” We parents support our kids!! There was talk started that he might leave the Creek months back, turned out he was looking around, hoping to go to Springfield, but NO ONE wanted him, so were stuck!! Those were the best weeks in our kids eyes, there was hope, there was a sense of we might learn something new, there was dollar signs in my eyes, because I’m seriously enrolling my kid in Alter, Carrol, or CJ. Something needs to be done quick!

Great Job at Fairborn? Fairborn Athletics Expendable? No, The guy left as soon as he could when he realized the Superintendent, his henchman and their sycophants are the only ones whose children benefit from an over emphasis on athletics for “The chosen ones” Glad to see he escaped, it is not so easy for others…

Go back and look at Beavercreek Football record books and look at the history of the football program. If Beavercreek wins one game this year, The coach will be the 2nd winningest Head Coach in school history. The current 2nd winningest coach is Jim Place. The first is Paul Martin with 39 wins. Beavercreek has had 1 bad season since that staff has been there (last season). Go back and do your research before you bad mouth anybody or a Coaches program.

Smerz is a good leader and above all a great man. He was my AD when I was in HS at Burg and now I have the pleasure of working with him professionally. He did a great job at Burg and left after a Super slashed spending and budgets to get a levy passed. He has turned Fairborn around from a doormat in the GWOC South to an above average opponent. Now the same levy troubles start at Born and 30 plus teachers are cut; 3 varsity head coaches. Beavercreek stole this one. Vote yes on your levies Beavercreek! You have the athletic talent, the facilities and a proven leader to build on what Zink started.

Unfortunately “CLOD”felter’s contract was recently renewed. I have never heard anything good of him or his staff from past and current players. They are full of themselves along with their beligerent and tyranical actions. There are no fundementals taught. Watch BC’s blocking and tackling technique. I know of many BC kids that won’t play because of the CLOD. Give it some thought…why does a school with such a large student population have such a small football participation rate. It is not the students, BC has just been cursed with lousy head coaches that couldn’t tell you which end of the football is pointed.
