Regional semifinals set; Division I in Cincy

At 10-1 and a No. 2 seed, Northmont High School football coach Lance Schneider is still playing the underdog card.

And he’s probably right this week.

The Thunderbolts are one of two Dayton-area teams battling traditional Cincinnati powers next Saturday, Nov. 8 in the Division I, Region 4 semifinals.

No. 4-seeded Wayne (8-3) tackles top seed Colerain (10-1) at 3 p.m. in one game at Nippert Stadium. Northmont plays Cincinnati Elder (10-1) at 7 p.m.

“No one picked us to win the GWOC Central,” Schneider said after Northmont survived a 28-27 quarterfinal win over Fairmont. “No one picked us to beat Centerville.

“No one believes in us but the guys in the locker room. If we come out on top (against Elder) people will say what a huge upset. If we get beat, we’ll go down swinging.”

Elder smoked Centerville 52-27, so the Thunderbolts know about the challenge that lies ahead.

The same goes for Wayne, which drubbed Cincinnati Woodward 52-0. The Warriors have senior quarterback Ryan Bitsko back on the field, but face a Colerain team which has beaten St. Xavier and Moeller.

Well the might Elks went down in defeat. It all goes back to the N’Mont Centerville game when the coach made the stupid call of going for a 1st down at 4th & 3 with the lead, and defense shutting out N’Mont Offense. That dumb call changed the whole playoff draws as the Elks would have played Fairmont and won then Elder next week. Those poor senior players for Elks had their season cut short by their dumb coach… It is time for Ullery to RETIRE

its bad enough elder gets to recruit, then the ohsaa makes it easier for the cinci teams by always scheduling the games in cinci. northmont is the higher seeded team and should get to play closer to home. these are uspposed to be neutral site games

Seems to me that C’ville, Wayne, Northmont, etc, having to play the Cincy schools that are free to recruit to build their teams isn’t a fair practice. The Dayton schools build powerful teams from the talent they have. Cincy can’t play by the same rules and win.

From OHSAA: All Time Tourney records. Colerain 23-12 Won State in 04 Elder 21-9 Back to Back State in 02/03 Wayne 8-11 No State Champ But at least have gone to the game Northmont 2-7 No wins past first rounds.. PROVE to the OHSAA that Elder recruits. Don’t you think they get calls every year about it and NEVER Finds a thing wrong. You just can’t handle the fact Cincy schools better. So you yell Recruit,Recruit.

RJ - Naturally Cinn schools better, for example Elder all boys DAH, what do you expect. However I agree with Rocketmole, N’Mont is a higher seed and the N’Mont - Elder game should be played at Dayton Welcome Stadium not Nippert. Elder played 4-5 games at Nippert this year alone.

For being named “Springfield news-sun” one would think you would at least cover sports in the county of origin? where’s the love for catholic central and tecumseh? You and brian plasters amuse me at your slanted news toward dayton D-I teams. It makes your coverage all the more irrelevant.

OK lets get the facts straight… - this will be Elder’s 3rd game this year @ Nippert. - OHSAA determined the site based upon costs and seating capacity. Welcome Stadium is not a suitable site for these games as capacity will limit the crowds which will suprass 16,000 for both games.Remember the OHSAA needs the $$ to pad their bottom line. BTW, one $7 presale ticket is good for both Wayne & Northmont games on Sat., that’s a deal! - Elder does not recruit; if you think otherwise please prove it. Look for years (inthe 80’s & 90’s) Cincy team were heading to Welcome Stadium for playoff games. Nippert is a far superior venue to watch a game and you can’t deny that.

Pure and simple, for whatever the reason the Cincinnati D1 teams get a HOME game in the second round and probably next round too. The student athletes should be put before the bottom line. OHSAA should be ashamed.

Edzo, it’s about OHSAA making money & it will not change. There’s 3 sports tourneys that the OHSAA makes all of their operating revenue off of: Football, Hoops & Wrestling. All other tourneys the OHSAA loses money. So, unless you want to start & fund a fundraiser for them you’re going to have to take it on the chin with OHSAA’s decision on football sites and deal with it regardless how unfair you & others think it is.

to r.j.—-it is a self fulfilling prophecy—keep scheduling all the games in cinci, the cinci teams are more likely to win. to 99bob—why are the cinci games the ONLY doubleheader in division 1. if it wasnt a doubleheader, welcome stadium would be fine. and as for recruiting. give me a break-the parochial schools all over ohio have been doing since the beginning (i was recruited in toledo in the 70’s)

Rocketmole, it’s a double header because it makes sense and the OHSAA knows to put the games in a venue that will draw more fans and will make more money than if there was two separate sites. I’ll reiterate again it’s about the OHSAA making as much money as they can. Credit the OHSAA for releazing that Colerain & Elder have very large followings that will attend both games. Also, historically the OHSAA has had a lot success with the double headers in Cincy in the past so it should work again. As for recruiting you’re obviously not going to trust me but please ask a knowledgeable Colerain fan about Elder and ask them if Elder recruits. Elder is more of neighborhood school than you realize. Yes, they have no boundaries but they traditionally get 95% plus of their students from traditional catholic feeder schools located in the West side of Cincy area.

To add to my post above, since Elder is a parochial school they need to attract students to attend the school who are willing to fork over the dollars for tuition for the education. If you want to call that recruiting I will admit to it on that level. However, Elder does not specifaclly go after certain students because they are gifted athletcally. And, if they did I and many others would stop the donations to the school immediately.

88Bob.Thanks for the support against the Dayton Folks. IF anyone from Dayton would take a drive to the West Side of Cincy, go to the streets the Elder palyers live on, they will find Brothers-Cousins-Uncles-Granparents Both Sides and GreatGrandparents bothsides THAT went to ELDER. It cost $12,000 a year for a kid to go to Elder. I have been to many PIT games in the last 8 yrs..TBC

ERR I meant 99 Bob. Hit the wrong numbers.I have a HS buddy whose two kids went to Elder. I got to know many of the familys there. They are not the RICH people, just great talent when it comes to FB. When you have a Older Bro play at Elder, the younger bros try and out play him. Plus IF you do have the games at Nippet OHSAA knows they will get 20,000 at the games. Try and get even that amount at UD welcome. Even if Welcome could hold that many Dayton fans would not show up.In 03 OHSAA moved game Elder Vs Nmont to Miami Yeager stadium seeing how they knew Elder fans would travel there. Bolts fans stayed home. In the 2 state games Elder had over 15,000- fans go to Canton to watch the games..You would never get that many from Nmont go to Maimi U.

The USA Vs Ohio games wereheld at Nippert due to amount ofseatsthey could fill. So Elder played at Nippert for that game. You think Elder plays pansyseach year. ? Get Don Besco(?) Prep or St Thomas A of Fla or Delasalle from Ca, BTW Elder is 10-0 against Ohio teams this year. How well did Nmont fair Vs St Iggys -they lost. In 2010 Elder will have a spot open seeing how they will drop West Hi, SO why don’t Nmont ask to play Elder ? have your AD call Elders Ad and put them on for the next 2-3 yrs? A team only gets better by playing better teams. In losing you gain what it takes to Win.Elder does this yr in and out. Try it Nmont and see how much better you get. That’s it end of story.

Hey Mark, any idea if the games on Saturday are being broadcast over the radio waves? I’d love to be able to catch some of the action!

If the OHSAA Scheduled the Northmont,Elder game at Nippert because they knew it would draw more fans and money. Then why is Elder playing Pinkerton at Welcome Stadium in Dayton? Sounds to me like they wanted to give them the advantage..
