Alter/Coldwater/other: Who wins Region 16?

Four of the Associated Press’ top six team in the Division IV poll reside in Region16. Coldwater, Clinton-Massie, Alter and Brookville went 40-0 on the field, with the Knights falling to 8-2 due to forfeits.

Some people feel Alter has an unfair advantage by being a private school. Others say the Knights are doing nothing wrong, just following OHSAA rules.

Even without Alter, the Region 16 group is a grinder. Who do you think comes out on top?

Who will win the Region 16 football crown?
  Coldwater
  North College Hill
  Oakwood
  Jonathan Alder
  Clinton-Massie
  Hamilton Badin
  Alter
  Brookville

Coldwater will win state, not just the region. I wish DDN would stop calling them an “area” team. If that was the case all the teams in Cincy and Columbus would be local. What gives??

Selling newspapers, dude…….the only time Coldwater or any MAC school is part of the “DDN area” is when the playoffs begin.

I’ve had a number of friends from Coldwater throughout college and grad school, and each one of them always said they were from the “Dayton area”. Get over yourself.

Coldwater’s beat up but the senior’s goal is state and these seniors rarely fail at anything.Alter has 3 or 4 DI players,Coldwater has 1.I hope this years game is a little more exciting than last year’s “Bore-Bowl”

Clinton Massie will win the region this year. They will be ready for the rematch with Coldwater. It will be a good game, but the falcons will pull it out. GO CM!!!

Why bring up the “private school” issue? Look at Alter’s roster. Most/maybe all of those kids are from local parishes. They might get a few from other parts of Dayton, but the key players are local. A lot of them are descendants of Coldwater/Minster people. We had Klenke’s at Alter too. Does your philosophy mean that we all have to live, work and go to school in the immediate locale of our birth to make something legitimate? Are the Klenke’s of Coldwater acceptable, but the Klenke’s of Kettering barred from H.S. Sports because they didn’t stay in their place? Drop the Private School argument. People move and educate according to what they feel is best for their families and shouldn’t be punished for this.

KJ, punished has nothing to do with the private/recruiter school argument. Put Alter in a “private school division” and let them have at it! Those kids will get the same chance on the field, but the public schools, whose enrollment IS LIMITED to kids who live in a certain area won’t be punished competing with schools with unlimited pool of talent - if that school can convince them to come on over.

I’m from Coldwater and live in Washington Township. Coldwater is very good. They won it all in 2005 and 2007 and will win again in 2008 and will roll over Alter on there way to state and beat Cardinal Mooney again like they did in 2005 and 2007.

Since when is public school “limited by enrollment” look at Cville and see how many recruited kids were given addresses and parents jobs so they can come and play there. So tired of hearing how catholic schools ” recruit”. Catholic schools don’t have all the perks that pubic schools have, look at the facilities of some of the local catholic schools and tell my why if you were “recruited” would you want to go there?????

The facts of the matter is Alter has nothing to be proud of playing down in a divison IV When they take the field with Div I & II players that are recruited from other areas Play with your correct div. (I don’t care what your numbers say) Then when your kids win the can do it with pride!!

Hey sweet pea of course I would want to go to a catholic school if I was recruited even if the facilities are bad I’m going to play the sports I a recruited for not because I want to be in a nice building

Hey snt2009 alter is in divison IV because of the number of boys in the school. It looks to me that there are kids leaving the school that is why they dropped a division. And why not play a D-1 or a D-2 school, it should be a blow out for a larger school to play a smaller school.

Coldwater is so strong they would beat Centerville. I have watched both play. Coldwater has a heck of a coach and C’ville does not Ullery blew the game against Northmont. Centerville just can’t beat those Cincy teams when it counts. Coldwater wins it all again. They roll over Alter like last year.

Coldwater would beat Centerville & Northmont this year & last. Alter lost in overtime last year. Don’t count them out yet. Thier teams have very good for several years. I am sure they could have beaten Cville or Northmont some of those years also. They have beaten Elder in the past as Cville has defeated Moeller. Teams are different each year and each game so history has very little effect on the outcome. Maybe if freshmen or JV games were played maybe that history would be some kind of indicator…but not much.

Based on Alter’s tough schedule, I would say they should come out on top. Alter beat Fairmont easily and Fairmont beat Wayne and barely lost to Northmont. Coldwater’s schedule is pretty weak compared to Alter’s.

99% of Alter’s players are local. Just because they have a good team doesn’t mean they are recruiting. Most of them are from local parishes. Alter has had about 40 players go D-I in the last 25 years. The amazing thing is that Centerville has had just as many or more. Most of Alter’s guys would go to Centerville or Fairmont if Alter didn’t exist. Face it, Alter just happens to be located in a Football hotbed and doesn’t need to recruit.
