Games we’d like to see, plus playoff thoughts
A column I wrote in Friday’s Varsity already has generated some feedback. Here’s another forum for readers to give input.
The topic was area high school football matchups we’d like to see, but probably won’t. Among the proposed games: Wayne-Alter; Valley View-Northmont; Alter-Centerville; Troy-Tippecanoe; Marion Local-Carroll; CJ-Dunbar; Piqua-Coldwater; Bellbrook-Beavercreek.
The first couple comments received were:
“CJ -Trotwood: This (would) be a huge game. There is a lot of family members that play (at) both schools.”
“Milton-Union vs. Jonathan Alder. Jon Alder’s coach Steve Coate played his HS ball at Milton-Union.
“Coldwater vs. Centerville: Why not? Centerville wouldn’t gain a ton of points for a win over this behemoth? This would put to rest who the real top team in the Dayton area is. Coldwater wins this game most years.”
Any matchups you guys want to see and why?
Woodward (10-0) is in
Cincinnati Woodward won Thursday night to finish 10-0 and will make the Division I, Region 4 playoff field. No, the team didn’t play the toughest schedule, but there’s more than one way to skin a Harbin.
Under this kind of playoff system, each team has its own formula for how to make it. While 9-1 probably wouldn’t do it, the Bulldogs went 10-0 — which will get them a road game against a favored team. Good for them. If this is the system — and it is — then why rip somebody for finding their best way through it?
Four GWOC Central teams strong possibility
Northmont is in. Wayne and Fairmont are in with wins, but maybe even with losses. Of course, a Fairmont loss means that Centerville won. That all but puts the Elks into the mix.
Depending on how things break down Friday night, that Saturday night Moeller vs. St. Xavier game might just be for ninth place. On the other hand, it could be for eighth and a possible date at Colerain.
Is that fair to the Cardinals as an award for the top seed while Elder or Northmont or Centerville would play Woodward? No. But, hey, the playoffs aren’t too worried about fair. They are all about making it and then beating whatever team is put in front of you.

Hang on Centerville fans who think that they would just roll over Coldwater. Ask Kokomo, Indiana about this. Also ask Worthington Kilbourne how it feels to play a team from the ‘MAC.’
