Northmont 40, Springfield 6

Springfield’s 7-0 win over Centerville last week might have made Northmont coach Lance Schneider’s job easier this week. Now there was no looking past the Wildcats to the upcoming Elks. “I think it helped a little bit,” Schneider said of helping his team focus. “It’s a score you have to raise your eyebrows at.” Northmont erased any ideas of an upset with two Joe Inkrott field goals in the first half and quarterback Chase Belton’s touchdown with 17 seconds left in the second quarter. Springfield, meanwhile, never had a drive longer than three plays until the fourth quarter.

Star of the Game: The defense. Dan Gress, Ryan Duncan, Khurram El-Amin and Quintin Cooper were among those with big plays for Gang Green. The Thunderbolts held the Wildcats to 79 yards on offense (37 rushing) and six first downs. Springfield had minus-10 yards rushing and just 13 offensive plays in the first half.

Turning point: It could easily be Northmont’s game-opening 18-play drive that took 6:39 off the clock. There were five first downs, two fourth-down conversions and it ended with a field goal that set the tone. Northmont nearly had more yards on that drive (67) than Springfield did in the game (79). What this means: Northmont shares the GWOC Central lead with Fairmont and is on pace for the postseason. But big games with Centerville, Fairmont and Beavercreek remain. Springfield drops a game back in the GWOC, but can still play spoiler.

Quote: “Tonight was supposed to be the opportunity to control our own destiny. Now we don’t control it but we still have three games left and we still have a shot at it.” — Springfield coach Rick Robertson

“This division, I think it’s going to be a war of attrition. Whoever stays healthy.” — Schneider.

On deck: Northmont travels to Centerville for another brutal match-up that is loaded with GWOC Central title implications and computer points. Springfield tries to play spoiler — and maybe jump back into the GWOC title chase — by hosting Fairmont.

I think Northmont will be ready for the centerville game next week. We have won 5 straight and playing with no injuries at all. Thats the key factor on this team this eason is no injuries up to this point. No injuries means your team is ready for the big game against Centerville and after that look ahead for playoffs. This game has alot of playoff points up for grabs. As of right now Northmont is 7th in playoff points and Centerville 8th. GO BOLTS!!!!!!!!!!
