Gold Glover Phillips no longer angry
Brandon Phillips admits that shortstop is his first love and switching to second base was torture and traumatic, but as he said, “I talked to (former infielder) Delino DeShields and he told me, ‘If you can dance, you can play second base.’”
Phillips can dance. And as he said, “I dance with the stars at second base. That’s what I call it, ‘Dancing on the Diamond.‘“The 27-year-old Cincinnati Reds infielder danced his way to a Rawlings Gold Glove this year, emblematic of being the best defensive second baseman in the National League.
Manager Dusty Baker said he was shocked when he talked to Phillips and Phillips couldn’t believe he won the Gold Glove, “And I couldn’t believe he couldn’t believe it.”
Managers and coaches do the voting and Baker said, “Nearly every day a manager or coach comes up to me and asks about Brandon and tells me what a pleasure it is watching that guy.
“Brandon Phillips works hard,” Baker added. “He practices making catches over his head and I’ve never seen a player practice that.”
Phillips should have won the award last year, had better numbers than Arizona’s Orlando Hudson, but Hudson won.
“To tell you the truth, it hurt me last year when I didn’t win,” he said. “I was really pissed. Now that I’ve finally won one — well, it’s great the people are finally recognizing my defense.”
Phillips was a 30/30 offensive player last year (30 homers, 30 stolen bases), but only a 24/23 player this year, losing 27 points off his batting average (.288 to .261).
“To me, winning the Gold Glove is more important and more satisfying than the 30/30,” he said. “Defense is my passion and I take pride in it. I’m all about defense. Defense wins games and this is the best thing to happen to me.”
Phillips said winning the Gold Glove is one of many surprises that have popped up in his career, “But winning this is a blessing. I worked hard to get this award and I’m blessed to finally be recognized.”
Baker said he knows Phillips won’t stop working.
“The first one is the toughest,” he said. “But I see four or five more in his future. A great defensive player can pick up the offense. It prevents offense from the other team when you make a great play and turn a double play.
“His range and his athleticism and his arm are special,” Baker added. “He is so good he could almost be a tumbler.”
Or Dance With the Stars.
Phillips got this year what he deserved last year - and actually he deserved it both years.
The man with the flashy glove and the flashy smile won his first Gold Glove, emblematic of being the defensive second baseman in the National League.
Phillips led all NL second basemen with a fielding percentage of .990 this season, making only seven errros in 706 chances.
And he didn’t do it by making only the routine plays. Phillis roamed far to his left, far to his right and deep into the outfield to make many superlative plays and ghostly throws.
He is the first Reds player to lead the league in fielding percentage at second base in consecutive seasons since Bret Boone did it in three straight years from 1995-97.
In addition he is the first Reds player to win a Rawlings Gold Glove Award since Pokey Reese earned the honors in 2000, also as a second baseman.
Phillips received the Bill James Handbook’s Fielding Bible Award as the best defensive second basemen in the Major Leagues. His career-high 78-game errorless streak from April 10 through July 8 was the second-longest by a second baseman in the Major Leagues last season (Pittsburgh’s Freddy Sanchez, 82 games).

Hall of Fame baseball writer Hal McCoy is in his 36th year of covering the Cincinnati Reds, the longest tenure for any active writer covering one team. Counting spring training and postseason games, McCoy has covered more than 7,000 major-league baseball games, written close to 18,000 baseball stories and eaten enough hot dogs to give Babe Ruth indigestion.

The Reds may be able to get Torrealba for a modest player or two. Atkins will get some high bids from other teams though he is a risk outside of Coors field. I’d take a chance on him but I fear the Reds will have to give up too much to get him. Taveras and his .308 on base % is not a good fit. The teams that can make good trades are the ones with a surplus of good young players on the MLB roster and in the minors. Teams like Minnesota, Oakland, Florida, Tampa Bay, and the other usual suspects like the Red Sawx, Dodgers, Braves, Angels, Brewers. The Reds are short on a surplus of young talent so its tough to make good deals.By Hussein

Yahoo Sports headline: Reds, Angels, Twins, Indians linked to Rockies’ Atkins. Could it be the Refs are looking for another 3rd baseman? If so, here’s the typical Red’s scenario — Reds pay top dollar or trade one of their prized players for him. Who ever the Reds trade will have two Hall of Fame years and Atkins will bat .250 (maybe) 12 HR. Reds will then not resign him after the two years and Atkins will go on to put up HOF numbers as will whoever the Reds traded for him. Leaving the Reds with nothing but another bad trade/decision. See Ryan Dempster, Josh Hamilton, Paul O’Neil, Tony Perez, Frank Robinson. Is it a coincidence that the Reds and the Bengals are in Cincinnati?? I THINK NOT!!!! BTW, the latest reports, from Fox Sports and the Denver Post, say the Reds have talked to the Rockies about Atkins, center fielder Willy Taveras and catcher Yorvit Torrealba.By rob in stl

Janish was merely mentioned as tradebait, not that he is a proven “good” player. For that matter, Saltalamacchia is not a proven “good” player either but merely a former top prospect who has yet to live up to his alleged potential same as Homer Bailey.By Mike-Cinci
November 12, 2008 8:17 AM | Link to this
Respectfully Janish will never start in the big leagues. He can’t hit. He is a younger version of Juan Castro but not quite as good in the field. No team will give the Reds anything of value for Janish. The Reds can’t trade their “not quite good enough guys” for another team’s good players. The other teams are not that stupid.By Jerry

November 11, 2008 3:45 PM | Link to this
Saltalamachhia is likely headed to Boston. Meanwhile the Reds are talking to the Rockies about Willy Taveras, Yorvit Torrealba, and Garrett Atkins. Taveras just seems like another version of Corey Patterson. Dickerson is a better option in CF. Torrealba isn’t as good as Hanigan. Atkins though would enable the Reds to move Encarnacion to LF. He is a decent hitter and decent 3B. No word on who the Reds are offering in exchange. Jocketty better be careful on this deal.By crosley

The Rangers have a surplus of catchers and after Saltalamacchia’s weak season last year, I feel he would be available certainly for less than Cueto. With the Red’s surplus of shortstops, Janish could also be trade bait.By Mike-Cinci
November 11, 2008 2:28 PM | Link to this
No team will give anything of value for Bailey until he begins to look like he can pitch in the majors. It would take Cueto to get Saltalamachhia and the Reds won’t do that. The Reds need to build the farm system so they are deepeer in talent. With more young prospects they can begin to make good trades. Right now they need to hang on to their young talent. They need the good young players. Why trade a good young player or players for Hernandez a 33 year old catcher the Orioles don’t want and who will cost $8 million?By Kerry

Saltalamachhia would platoon only initially—-if he realizes his predicted potential he would certainly be the starter. He was more highly rated than Bailey and is closer to being a regular starter than is Bailey.By Y-City Jim

The Reds wouldn’t because they haven’t bailed on Bailey like the fans have. Also Coco Crisp has a lifetime .331 OBP. That’s hardly numbers for a lead off hitter. The Reds would be better off with Dickerson.By joe

Not sure why the Reds would trade a top pitching prospect Bailey to Texas for a platoon catcher.By crosley
November 9, 2008 9:47 AM | Link to this
I’ve been advocating Bailey for Saltalamacchia of the Rangers, a natural trade to fill the needs for both teams with touted prospects who have not lived up to their potential. Salty is a switchhitter who could at least platoon with Hanigan. If the Reds did not want to part with Bailey, then they should go after Ramon Hernandez of the Orioles who at 33 next year would give the Reds a quality veteran catcher who as a righthanded hitter would add 20 plus homers to the lineup. The only drawback is he’s due 8 mil next year but if the Reds are really serious about competing…..By Buster

Depends if they want to spend any money. Burrell is a righthanded power hitter that plays LF. And I would like to see them get Coco Crisp and put him in CF and bat him leadoff. Then we would have: Crisp Votto Phillips Bruce EE Burrell SS C PBy MAC

It’s comical to revisit this blog after a few months and see how some people never change. Like little children. And Matt makes it so easy for others to get under his skin, taking the bait they offer so they’re right back where they want to be IN MATT’S HEAD, and game on. Must have some sort of death wish or something. Then Matt tries to take the self-appointed high road, says he’s not going to respond and then a few posts later he’s back for more, like an addict, defending some perceived honor he feels was violated. How stupid! It just keeps the sh!tstorm-a-brewin’. But some simply are too immature to grasp that concept. I guess it’s the stupidity of youth being so seriously outplayed by older and much wiser gamers like this. Hal, this is much funnier than watching SNL! Ooops, better watch my back. Congrats to BP. I was afraid his down year offensively would hurt his chances for the Gold Glove. It’s good to see the GG go to a real defensive player. The Silver Slugger award is for the best offensive players. Too often I think the best defenders get the short shrift to the best offensive players. ON ANOTHER POINT: Some of you people are determined to ruin Hal’s blog. I was excited to see a new posting by Hal, only to click into the comments and see a bunch of lame brains blathering politics and calling each other names. Hal, please don’t quit blogging. If it comes to a choice - keep the blog/column and eliminate the comments. Don’t throw out the baby with the dirty bathwater drinkers. OK, I’ll ask you a third time. What proof or evidence do you have that I am a racist? You say I have already proved it. How? When? Because we disagreed on some things regarding the Reds, and obviously politics, that makes me a “psycho racist”? You can’t have a disagreement with someone without making it personal, can you? Well I’ve had enough of your crapola. When you can provide some sort of answer to my question about how I am a “racist”, as you say, let me know. Right now though, I’m going to be the bigger man and walk away from this never-ending argument with you. You know, Brarhopper, my personal life is really none of your business. This is a blog on the Internet. That’s the one bad thing about the Internet, is that scum like you can post and say pretty much anything they want with no filter or censor. Pure trash is what you are, and with every post in which you attempt to bully me you prove that. You sure seem to have a hateful outlook (what else is new?) towards Fox News. Most liberal zealots usually do, since Fox News is one network on TV that hasn’t dedicated itself to the left. Fox News engages in fact-based reporting, and is the most fair and balanced network on TV. Don’t believe me? Look at the ratings. They are through the roof, sir. You also claim that I am a “racist”. Do you have anything to back that up with? Any shred of proof or evidence that I am a “racist”? Am I a “racist” because I didn’t support Obama? Don’t play that race card on me, because I won’t lay down for it. Take your liberal talking points and your hatefulness to The Daily Kos or another liberal blog or message board. I’m sure they’d love to have you.By BrarHopper

Just because you don’t like what Hannity has to say doesn’t mean that it’s not true, or isn’t based in at least some fact. I would advise you to get off of barackobama.com and moveon.org, and look at Barack Obama based on what he stands for, or at least what he claims to stand for. What President-elect Obama wants to do, and he has made this clear, is to take money from one class and give that money to another class. That is clear and present socialism. You can slice and dice it any way that you want, but that’s what it is. But when you turn a presidential election into American Idol, this is what we end up with. The most liberal member of the Senate, who will raise taxes, “spread the wealth around”, and who will be easy prey for rogue dictators around the world. I voted based on substance, and based on who would be the best leader of this country. Not who gave the best speeches or who happened to be black.By Toallwholivethelie

A little socialism sure helped when FDR pulled people out of economic depression and put people to work building parks, roads, bridges, and public buildings! The last eight years of corporate welfare and conservative socialism for the rich, is exactly why Obama is our president—what goes around comes around, ignorant one. Hey buddy, Obama’s “spread the wealth” statement came from his own mouth. Fox News didn’t make that up, that’s a direct quote from President-elect Obama. As are his naive, appeasement foreign policy plans. This isn’t all made up by the right-wing nuts, these are facts substantiated by your candidate. But when all your worried about is “anybody but Bush” and being cool and electing our first black president, you probably aren’t paying too much attention to things like issues and substance. Heads up BP — consider yourself duly warned! Matt wil be let out of the the puzzle factory for OZFEST and will be armed with a pen (?) and is coming to see YOU and he wants an autograph. Just look at his eyes and check his pupils. If he’s wearing pajamas & paper slippers and has that flat vacant stare, and if he’s drooling and has those rope burns on his neck — RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!!By Kevin E.

Way to go Brandon! About he got what he deserves. Sarah, how is BP a clubhouse cancer? He is the best team player we have and one the best teammates any team could have. This guy wants his team to win and it shows every time he hustles out there. When was the last time we had a guy that hustled every day like that? Way to go BP!By J F

It’s about time! Dont worry the reds will trade him or p**s him off soon. He’s the face of the Reds right now and it should stay that way! You people that dont like BP are just negative nancies…hes the most liked guy in the locker room and someone needs to stay positive when your organization is that bad! Dont run this guy out of town like the best player of our generation(washed up or not)!By asdf

All you Phillips bashers out there, have you ever looked down the first base line before a game to see who’s signing autographs? You bet, it’s BP! It’s nice to know some players realize this game is still for the fans.By Mr. Redlegs (Original)

Nice work, BP. He is the finest defensive second baseman I’ve seen in years. As for his offensive numbers, yes, he’s an ideal sixth hitter. He is no Chase Utley, but, since many statistical services call Utley one of the best 5 offensive players in the NL, that is no shame. The Reds need a clean-up hitter, but they need BP in the field and in the line-upBy deuce

Of course we all knew that Brarhopper would have to bring his liberal talking points to this blog, when it’s been made clear to all of us to leave politics off this blog. Anyway, Redsfest is coming up in a little bit more than a month now! I’m starting to get pretty excited about it. The one player that I am most looking forward to meeting and getting an autograph from this year is no doubt BP. Congrats again on the Gold Glove, Brandon!By M

Congratulations, a Gold Glove is a very distinctive honor. Well earned, Brandon is a very good ball player and the award is well deserved. To SARAH, what are you doing in the Reds locker room to know what kind of person Brandon is ? You people are always so F^&%$#g negative.By The Plain Truth

God you people are MORONS! He’s a cancer, not a team player. Jesus just put 9 Ryan Freels out their so these people will be happy. We won’t win 40 games but at least well keep the rubes happy!!!!!!By MAC

I’ll admitt BP does play w/ a degree of cockiness, but then again U have to have confidence in your abilities & U have to be lose & relaxed to play well @ the ML level. As for his BA, the Reds didn’t help him any by putting him in the 4 hole; it encouraged him to overswing IMO. I’d like to see him as a Lead Off hitter, but then U take away his ability to drive in runs. Likewise, he might not like the LO spot either? The 3 hole is probably the best spot: he can still use his speed and drive in runs.By Sarah

What I don’t like about the guy is that his team is down seven runs and he has this smile on his face. He is not a team player!By tim

Compare Phillips’ offensive numbers to Chase Utley and you will see how weak this guy is offensively.By joe

But he was awful at the plate. A .261 batting average! He gives back on offense what he takes away on defense!By bill

Very Nice Brandon!Totally agree w/ Rob on the OF comment, but I can’t see moving him to SS. There’s a reason he was moved to SS @ AAA level guys: maybe he couldn’t make the throw or didn’t have the range? Perhaps he wasn’t nearly as good @ SS as he is @ 2nd? More importantly, a move now would more than likely hurt his offense and the Reds simply can’t afford that! Of course, I see the benefit of locking down the SS position, but I can’t see moving BP to do it?By ShockMonkey

Seems like a natural to move him to SS but of course, Dusty’s against it. Says it weakens us in two areas. I’ve yet to figure that one out but I’m working on it. Congrats BP!By steve

Wizard you are exactly right. Brandon and his sparkling defense and cannon to SS. 2b doesn’t require as much and will be easier for the Reds to fill. Wizard Rocks & Rules! Brandon AND Obama WON )and beat the McLosers). What a day! What a week! What a great intelligent country we are again! Hope has returned! YEA!!!By Matt

It’s about time that credit was given to where credit was due. It was an injustice that he did not win the Gold Glove last year. But you know what? Better late than never. Hopefully, the GG this year is just the first of many for the Reds star second baseman. What a tremendous talent the Reds have out there at 2B. Now let’s keep him at 2B, and not move him to SS.By Wizard

You were brilliant Brandon. Much deserved—Congrats! I believe Matty G. is correct—You would strengthen the teams defense by playing your “favorite” position—shortstop. You don’t have to dance there—just cover the ground and use your cannon! You do both extremely well. That would solve the shortstop problem, if Gonzo is unable to go—and would allow other positions to be strengthened, instead. It would also, demonstrate your willingness to show TEAM LEADERSHIP qualities. It would also demonstrate that I have been correct all year, in saying, that is where you should be.By rob in stl
