The Reds may be able to get Torrealba for a modest player or two. Atkins will get some high bids from other teams though he is a risk outside of Coors field. I’d take a chance on him but I fear the Reds will have to give up too much to get him. Taveras and his .308 on base % is not a good fit. The teams that can make good trades are the ones with a surplus of good young players on the MLB roster and in the minors. Teams like Minnesota, Oakland, Florida, Tampa Bay, and the other usual suspects like the Red Sawx, Dodgers, Braves, Angels, Brewers. The Reds are short on a surplus of young talent so its tough to make good deals.

Yahoo Sports headline: Reds, Angels, Twins, Indians linked to Rockies’ Atkins. Could it be the Refs are looking for another 3rd baseman? If so, here’s the typical Red’s scenario — Reds pay top dollar or trade one of their prized players for him. Who ever the Reds trade will have two Hall of Fame years and Atkins will bat .250 (maybe) 12 HR. Reds will then not resign him after the two years and Atkins will go on to put up HOF numbers as will whoever the Reds traded for him. Leaving the Reds with nothing but another bad trade/decision. See Ryan Dempster, Josh Hamilton, Paul O’Neil, Tony Perez, Frank Robinson. Is it a coincidence that the Reds and the Bengals are in Cincinnati?? I THINK NOT!!!! BTW, the latest reports, from Fox Sports and the Denver Post, say the Reds have talked to the Rockies about Atkins, center fielder Willy Taveras and catcher Yorvit Torrealba.

Janish was merely mentioned as tradebait, not that he is a proven “good” player. For that matter, Saltalamacchia is not a proven “good” player either but merely a former top prospect who has yet to live up to his alleged potential same as Homer Bailey.

Respectfully Janish will never start in the big leagues. He can’t hit. He is a younger version of Juan Castro but not quite as good in the field. No team will give the Reds anything of value for Janish. The Reds can’t trade their “not quite good enough guys” for another team’s good players. The other teams are not that stupid.

Saltalamachhia is likely headed to Boston. Meanwhile the Reds are talking to the Rockies about Willy Taveras, Yorvit Torrealba, and Garrett Atkins. Taveras just seems like another version of Corey Patterson. Dickerson is a better option in CF. Torrealba isn’t as good as Hanigan. Atkins though would enable the Reds to move Encarnacion to LF. He is a decent hitter and decent 3B. No word on who the Reds are offering in exchange. Jocketty better be careful on this deal.

The Rangers have a surplus of catchers and after Saltalamacchia’s weak season last year, I feel he would be available certainly for less than Cueto. With the Red’s surplus of shortstops, Janish could also be trade bait.

No team will give anything of value for Bailey until he begins to look like he can pitch in the majors. It would take Cueto to get Saltalamachhia and the Reds won’t do that. The Reds need to build the farm system so they are deepeer in talent. With more young prospects they can begin to make good trades. Right now they need to hang on to their young talent. They need the good young players. Why trade a good young player or players for Hernandez a 33 year old catcher the Orioles don’t want and who will cost $8 million?

Reports say that Holliday is going to the Cardinals in a trade involving Ryan Ludwick. When you compare performance and price you scratch your head on why the Cards are making that deal especially when you realize their is some serious home field enhancement to Holliday’s stats.

Saltalamachhia would platoon only initially—-if he realizes his predicted potential he would certainly be the starter. He was more highly rated than Bailey and is closer to being a regular starter than is Bailey.

The Reds wouldn’t because they haven’t bailed on Bailey like the fans have. Also Coco Crisp has a lifetime .331 OBP. That’s hardly numbers for a lead off hitter. The Reds would be better off with Dickerson.

I’ve been advocating Bailey for Saltalamacchia of the Rangers, a natural trade to fill the needs for both teams with touted prospects who have not lived up to their potential. Salty is a switchhitter who could at least platoon with Hanigan. If the Reds did not want to part with Bailey, then they should go after Ramon Hernandez of the Orioles who at 33 next year would give the Reds a quality veteran catcher who as a righthanded hitter would add 20 plus homers to the lineup. The only drawback is he’s due 8 mil next year but if the Reds are really serious about competing…..

Congrats to BP. I was afraid his down year offensively would hurt his chances for the Gold Glove. It’s good to see the GG go to a real defensive player. The Silver Slugger award is for the best offensive players. Too often I think the best defenders get the short shrift to the best offensive players. ON ANOTHER POINT: Some of you people are determined to ruin Hal’s blog. I was excited to see a new posting by Hal, only to click into the comments and see a bunch of lame brains blathering politics and calling each other names. Hal, please don’t quit blogging. Just because you don’t like what Hannity has to say doesn’t mean that it’s not true, or isn’t based in at least some fact. I would advise you to get off of barackobama.com and moveon.org, and look at Barack Obama based on what he stands for, or at least what he claims to stand for. What President-elect Obama wants to do, and he has made this clear, is to take money from one class and give that money to another class. That is clear and present socialism. You can slice and dice it any way that you want, but that’s what it is. But when you turn a presidential election into American Idol, this is what we end up with. The most liberal member of the Senate, who will raise taxes, “spread the wealth around”, and who will be easy prey for rogue dictators around the world. He is no Chase Utley, but, since many statistical services call Utley one of the best 5 offensive players in the NL, that is no shame. The Reds need a clean-up hitter, but they need BP in the field and in the line-up

Of course we all knew that Brarhopper would have to bring his liberal talking points to this blog, when it’s been made clear to all of us to leave politics off this blog. Anyway, Redsfest is coming up in a little bit more than a month now! I’m starting to get pretty excited about it. The one player that I am most looking forward to meeting and getting an autograph from this year is no doubt BP. Congrats again on the Gold Glove, Brandon!

Congratulations, a Gold Glove is a very distinctive honor. Well earned, Brandon is a very good ball player and the award is well deserved. To SARAH, what are you doing in the Reds locker room to know what kind of person Brandon is ? You people are always so F^&%$#g negative.

I’ll admitt BP does play w/ a degree of cockiness, but then again U have to have confidence in your abilities & U have to be lose & relaxed to play well @ the ML level. As for his BA, the Reds didn’t help him any by putting him in the 4 hole; it encouraged him to overswing IMO. I’d like to see him as a Lead Off hitter, but then U take away his ability to drive in runs. Likewise, he might not like the LO spot either? The 3 hole is probably the best spot: he can still use his speed and drive in runs.

Compare Phillips’ offensive numbers to Chase Utley and you will see how weak this guy is offensively.

Very Nice Brandon!Totally agree w/ Rob on the OF comment, but I can’t see moving him to SS. There’s a reason he was moved to SS @ AAA level guys: maybe he couldn’t make the throw or didn’t have the range? Perhaps he wasn’t nearly as good @ SS as he is @ 2nd? More importantly, a move now would more than likely hurt his offense and the Reds simply can’t afford that! Of course, I see the benefit of locking down the SS position, but I can’t see moving BP to do it?

Seems like a natural to move him to SS but of course, Dusty’s against it. Says it weakens us in two areas. I’ve yet to figure that one out but I’m working on it. Congrats BP!

Wizard you are exactly right. Brandon and his sparkling defense and cannon to SS. 2b doesn’t require as much and will be easier for the Reds to fill. Wizard Rocks & Rules! It’s about time that credit was given to where credit was due. It was an injustice that he did not win the Gold Glove last year. But you know what? Better late than never. Hopefully, the GG this year is just the first of many for the Reds star second baseman. What a tremendous talent the Reds have out there at 2B. Now let’s keep him at 2B, and not move him to SS.

You were brilliant Brandon. Much deserved—Congrats! I believe Matty G. is correct—You would strengthen the teams defense by playing your “favorite” position—shortstop. You don’t have to dance there—just cover the ground and use your cannon! You do both extremely well. That would solve the shortstop problem, if Gonzo is unable to go—and would allow other positions to be strengthened, instead. It would also, demonstrate your willingness to show TEAM LEADERSHIP qualities.It would also demonstrate that I have been correct all year, in saying, that is where you should be.
