Has Marvin become ‘Bengalized?’
WHEN ALL THE LIFE GETS
SUCKED OUT OF YOU …
YOU’RE ‘BENGALIZED’
I’ve noticed this a lot in my 12 years as Cincinnati Bengals beat writer for the Dayton Daily News, especially since Paul Brown Stadium opened in 2000:
When you first walk into the building as a new employee — coach or player — you’re full of energy, enthusiasm and excitement.
You realize you’re in the NFL — the highest football loop in the land — and you feel immortal, invincible and impenetrable.
You’re driven to succeed.
You are strong.
And then some time goes by — a year or two or three — and suddenly you don’t feel like running through a wall anymore.
You start feeling stale, lethargic and tired.
Slowly, sadly, all the life gets sucked out of you.
Your intensity wanes.
You become weak.
Has this happened to you?
If so …
You’ve become “Bengalized.”
Willie Anderson, Takeo Spikes, Peter Warrick … just to name a few …
All were “Bengalized” and had to get out before they went insane.
Now I’m wondering if head coach Marvin Lewis has become “Bengalized.”
My Dayton Daily News colleague, Sean McClelland, fired me an E-mail late Monday afternoon.
“I just heard this on ESPN from Chris Mortensen,” Sean wrote.
Said Mort:
“I don’t know that Marvin wouldn’t welcome a dismissal.”
Congrats, Marv.
You’re officially “Bengalized.”

As has been mentioned before, Marvin will have to resign or wait ‘till the seats are empty for a while, then MB will fire him. It seems MB doesn’t care about football, he just loves to make money!By Brian

I think Marvin was hanging on by a thread before Mike brought back his man-crush, Chris Henry. I’d say he’s lapsed into Bengalization, but he’s still early in the affliction. He displays the infamous nervous laugh symptom and acute irritation with the media, but he hasn’t acquired the glazed over despondent blank stare that marked the terminal stages of Coslet and LeBeau. But don’t worry, continued employment under Mike Brown will get him there.By garland

I used to believe all the talk about Mike Brown was a little overdone.Ithen went online to look at wikipedia and see what a look at him would be from an outsider look.I think he is going to be the next Steven King topic for one of his books.Marvin is very much a candidate for Bengalization if he does not get himself inside a protective cone.Maybe he can escape by becoming someone elses defensive coordinator(see Dick Lebeau).By John

The Bengals are “The Long Walk” of the NFL. They are where good players and coaches go to die. Historically, that is suppose to be at the end of your career, but with the Bengals, it starts the moment you join them. Coaches change, players change, systems change, but the Bengals remain the same overall; average at best, hapless for the most part. That points directly to the top of the organization. A company with that record of performance would have replaced its top level management or failed and been gone long ago. In the case of the NFL, particularly the Bengals, they are rewarded without consequence and continue to make money, while players fail, coaches fail, the team fails, and fans of all levels of dedication are left with only hope, which does nothing to comfort the frustration of years of torment and the valid desire to want some consistent success. The Brown family is making money and that is fine with me as a businessman, however, as a Bengals fan I find their measure of success to not include the product and performance on the field year after year an unacceptable travesty. If you want to make money that is fine, but don’t continue to tell fans, or worse, yourself, that you are committed to winning or what you are doing is working with regard to that, when it is clearly obvious to everyone, expert and layman alike, that it is not. Someone that is committed to winning models what works with winning franchises and in that, finds a way to balance making money and delivering a consistently successful product. Mike Brown doesn’t owe us as fans anything, but he certainly does owe his father’s legacy far more than the amount of wealth he passes on to his children. In the past, the Brown name was something to be feared by opponents. It continues to be a name that should be feared, but for a different reason; as one players and coaches should stay away from, unless they’re ready for The Long Walk.By Scott

Willie Anderson and Takeo Spikes played at high levels until the end with the Bengals. I don’t see how you can say they fit your description of being Bengalized. Warrick was consistently mediocre throughout. He doesn’t really fit either.
